Hornets win Silver Bracket title at Barnesville Tournament

The Frazee Hornets blew past last year’s 12 wins and have put together its best season in at least a decade with six wins last week, which included a Silver Bracket championship at the Barnesville Tournament on Saturday.

Aynslee Johannsen had 12 kills as the Frazee Hornets defeated the Staples-Motley Cardinals 3-0 last week.
The Hornets opened the week with three straight 3-0 wins over Mahnomen/Waubun, Park Rapids Area and Staples-Motley, before going 3-1 in the Barnesville Tournament on Saturday. The Hornets defeated Battle Lake, New York Mills and Breckenridge 2-0, while falling to Minnewaska Area 2-0 to finish with a first place finish in the Silver Bracket.
Frazee is currently 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference. This week the Hornets hosted Battle Lake on Monday night, before traveling to Perham on Thursday in HOL action.
Monday
Frazee hit the road and swept Mahnomen/Waubun 3-0 in non-conference action on Monday night.

The Hornets secured a 25-16 win in the first game, before defeating the Thunderhawks 25-22, 25-19 to complete the three game sweep.
Ruby Eckert had a solid game across the board as the sophomore tied Jayden Sonnenberg with a team-high eight kills, while also leading the way with 15 digs. Analise Olson finished with 16 assists, while Brynn Larson finished with six kills and 12 assists. Kaija Aschnewitz chipped in with eight digs, while Sonnenberg and Rylee Stock led the way with two ace serves apiece.

Tuesday
Ruby Eckert finished with a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs, all-while hitting .563 as the Hornets secured a big Heart O’ Lakes Conference win over Park Rapids on Tuesday night. Eckert had 10 kills on just 16 attempts with just one error in the win.
After narrowly defeating the Panthers 25-23 in the first game, the Hroents took over with 25-14 and 25-15 wins in the second and third game to secure the three game sweep.
In addition to Eckert’s solid game from the floor, Aubree Bristlin finished with seven kills, Analise Olson finished with 20 assists and Kaija Aschnewitz reached double figures with 12 digs.
From the service line Jayden Sonnenberg was dominant throughout the night as she finished with six ace service, while also leading the team with four blocks.

Thursday
With shades of pink glowing in the stands, the Frazee Hornets swept Staples-Motley 3-0 as part of the annual Pink Night (block out cancer) game in Frazee. The Hornets overwhelmed the Cardinals 25-11 in the first game, before coming away with a 25-19, 25-17 win in the second and third games to come away with the sweep.
Aynslee Johannsen had a big game at the net as the sophomore finished with 12 kills, while Jayden Sonnenberg finished with nine and Ruby Eckert chipped in with seven.
Sonnenberg also finished with a team-high three block assists and one solo block.
Analise Olson and Ella Ullrich were busy keeping the hitters going throughout the night as they finished with 17 and 13 assists, while Eckert finished with a team-high four ace serves.
Defensively, Kaija Aschnewitz finished with 14 digs, while Eckert finished with 13 digs.

Saturday
Frazee finished in second place in their pool and defeated Breckenridge 2-0 in the Silver Bracket to wrap up a busy week on a positive note at the Barnesville Tournament on Saturday.
The Hornets opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Battle Lake (25-23, 25-15), before falling the Minnewaska Area 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) and defeating New York Mills 2-0 (25-21, 25-9) to finish in second place in their pool.
In the Silver Bracket championship, the Hornets swept Breckenridge 2-0 (25-21, 25-17) to wrap up a busy week with a 3-1 record at the Barnesville Tournament.
