Frazee to host Breckenridge Tuesday night

The Frazee Hornets improved to 17-4 on the season and remain in the driver’s seat for a home playoff game in the opening round of the Section 8AA tournament as just three games are remaining on their schedule.

Last week the Hornets swept Battle Lake in non-conference action on Monday night, before falling to Perham in Heart O’ Lakes Conference action 3-1 on the road. The loss drops the Hornets to a fourth place tie in the conference with Breckenridge with a HOL record of 3-2. Hawley is leading the conference with a record of 6-0, while Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Perham are tied with HOL records of 5-1.

This week the Hornets will host Breckenridge (15-5 overall and 3-2 in the HOL) on Tuesday night, before traveling to Barnesville (10-13 overall and 1-4 in the HOL) on Thursday.

Frazee will wrap up their regular season next Tuesday when they travel to DGF (19-7 overall and 5-1 in the HOL). 

The section tournament will get underway the week of October 20. There is currently a logjam of teams from Frazee in fifth place in the section to Wadena-Deer Creek in sixth, East Grand Forks in seventh and Thief River Falls in eighth place, all of whom are vying for a home game in the opening round of the section tournament. Barnesville is right on their heels in ninth place in the QRF standings.

Monday

The Hornets were led offensively by Ruby Eckert who had a team-high eight kills and hit .538 on the night. Jayden Sonnenberg hit .455 to finish with six kills, while Ellie Trieglaff and Aynslee Johannsen each finished with six kills. McKenna Wacker and Leslie Moore also chipped in with five and three kills apiece.

The duo of Analise Olson and Ella Ullrich each finished with 15 assists, while Sonnenberg and Eckert finished with eight and three ace serves apiece.

Defensively, Kaija Aschnewitz had a solid night from the floor as she finished with 13 digs. Eckert also reached double figures with 11 digs, Katie Courneya finished with 8 digs, Rylee Stock finished with seven, Ullrich picked up five and Olson finished with four digs in the win.

Thursday

Ruby Eckert picked up her second double-double in a matter of a week as the sophomore finished with 10 kills and a team-high 29 digs in a 3-1 loss to Perham on the road on Thursday night. 

After the Hornets dropped the first game to the Yellowjackets by a score of 25-19, the Hornets were unable to break the Yellowjacket serve and fell 25-8 in the second set to fall behind 2-0.

Frazee fought back in the third set for win 25-18, before dropping a heart breaker 25-23 in the fourth and final set to fall to Perham by a score of 3-1. The game was just the fourth loss for the Hornets all season as they fell to 3-2 in the conference and 17-4 overall.

In addition to her 10 kills and 29 digs, Eckert finished with a pair of solo blocks in the win.

Jayden Sonnenberg finished with seven kills, Aynslee Johannsen finished with six kills, while Ellie Trieglaff finished with three, Leslie Moore finished with two and McKenna Wacker and Kaija Aschnewitz each finished with one kill in the win.

Analise Olson and Ella Ullrich spread the ball around throughout the night as they finished with 12 and 11 assists respectively, while Aschnewitz finished with a pair of ace serves and 14 digs in the loss.
