The Frazee Hornets played spoiler on Friday night as the visitors put a quick and decisive damper on the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines as the home team was looking to score an upset to cap off homecoming week in Wadena. Fortunately for the Hornets, the visitors had their best offensive performance of the season as they defeated the Wolverines 46-12 on Friday night.

Ayden Grossman sheds a would-be tackler during Friday’s 46-12 win over Wadena-Deer Creek.

Frazee wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as WDC fumbled the ball on the opening play of the game. Frazee quickly scored and added another touchdown later in the quarter after an interception led to another Hornet touchdown to make the score 14-0. The Hornets would go on to add 26 more points in the first half as they took an eye popping 40-0 lead at halftime.

Blake Sonnenberg races down the sidelines with the ball during Friday’s game in Wadena.

“It always helps when you get turnovers on the other side of the field,” said head coach Russ Hackel. “We had three turnovers that we went and capitalized on in the first half.”

Frazee added one final touchdown, on a 76-yard run in the third quarter, to make the score 46-0.
The Wolverines added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter with the game already decided to end the score at 46-12 in favor of the Hornets.

Hackel said the Hornets once again put together a solid first half by scoring 40 points, but were only able to score six points in the second half. With just two games remaining on the schedule, Hackel said the Hornets will need to put together a full game before heading to the Section 8AA playoffs. So far this season the Hornets have played a largely Class A schedule against many of the schools in Section 6A.

“Our defense played really well I felt,” said Hackel. “Offensively we didn’t make very many mistakes, which is always a plus.”

Ayden Grossman, Ben Reiserson and Noah Mekalson converge on a tackle during Friday’s game against Wadena-Deer Creek.

With the win the Hornets improve to 4-2 overall as they head home for a pair of games in Frazee to close out the regular season.

On Friday night the Hornets will host Lake Park-Audubon, before hosting Otter Tail Central next Wednesday night. Both teams have identical 4-2 records to the Hornets as LP-A comes into the game averaging 26.5 points per game on offense, while surrendering 20 points per game on defense.

Benjamin Reierson looks for a hole to run through during Friday’s game in Wadena.

The Raiders have defeated West Central Area 28-14, Wadena-Deer Creek 55-8, Menahga 27-14 and New York Mills 20-14. Their losses have come to Otter Tail Central 22-16 and Breckenridge 48-13.

The Hornets average 28 points per game on offense, while giving up just 17.2 points per game on defense. Kick off for the game will be at 7 p.m.
