Vergas will soon have a SMART room in its event meeting room at no cost to the city. The high tech room is compliments of a program offered by Otter Tail County. Back in January, the Vergas City Council requested City Clerk Julie Lammers attend meetings regarding broadband in rural areas. The event was hosted by Otter Tail County. The county officials worked with the Blandin Foundation to obtain grant funding to help provide updated technology and services to rural areas.

The Vergas Park Board asked the city council to consider allowing pickle ball courts to be installed in the city. Board member Sherri Hanson said a group of people expressed interest in bringing the outdoor sport to the city, with intentions of hosting tournaments in the summer months.

The Frazee-Vergas School District spent more money than it received, but still maintained a healthy fund balance according to its fiscal year 2020 audit. During its regularly scheduled meeting last Monday night, Jean Luke Arel of Eide Bailly shared the findings of the district’s year-end audit. The district received just over $11.3 million in revenue and funding from other financing sources, while spending just over $12 million. The result was a $758,521 decrease in the district’s general fund balance last fiscal year.

According to current postal plans, Frazee’s new post office won’t be far from its current one. Just down the block, as a matter of fact. Subject to approval of U.S. Post Office headquarters in Washington D.C., the former Nelson Hardware building, 119 East Main Avenue, has been chosen to be leased and remodeled to become Frazee’s new post office. The address of the Frazee’s current post office is 103 East Main Avenue.

There’s no doubt that the nation’s population is aging. Projections are that by 2020, 20 percent of the national population will be 65 or older. Locally, one estimate is that one third of the population is made up of senior citizens. In the interest of helping that segment remain independent as long as possible, people in Frazee are taking steps to ensure seniors are well cared for while they remain in their homes.

Monthly Frazee Luncheons are being cancelled until further notice, according to Mickey Wothe, who coordinated the events for the Frazee Community Club. Lack of participation was cited as a reason. The lunches are scheduled to be revamped and started again at a later date. The cancellations include the luncheon which was scheduled for today (Thursday).
