The Minnesota Housing board recently approved more than $4 million in grants to support affordable and workforce housing development in small Greater Minnesota cities. The Greater Minnesota Small Cities Housing Aid Grant Program will provide grants to 33 cities with populations below 10,000.
Grants can be used to support an array of workforce and affordable housing needs, with priority given to projects supporting households with the lowest incomes. Qualifying small cities – also called Tier II Cities – must be located outside of the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. Grantees are located in every region of Greater Minnesota with grants ranging from $50,000 to $395,000.
“These small city grants support communities often underserved by public and private housing investments,” said Jennifer Ho, commissioner of Minnesota Housing. “This program will help people continue to live in the community of their choice while supporting vibrant cities across Greater Minnesota.”
The Greater Minnesota Small Cities Housing Aid Grant Program is funded through legislative appropriations. It is one of multiple programs designed to support local governments as they develop affordable rental and single-family housing. Grants are distributed through a competitive request for proposals process. The board of directors approved the grants during an August 28, 2025, meeting.
