Ruiz finishes in 10th place at section cross country meet

Eighth grader Rilynn Ruiz finished in 10th place and was just three seconds away from punching a trip to the state cross country meet that is set for Saturday at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Ruiz finished with a time of 20:20, which was just three seconds behind Ella Arnston, of Riverside Christian, who captured the final individual spot from Section 8A at the state cross country meet. Arnston finished in ninth place individually at the section meet, which was held in Bagley.
In addition to Ruiz’s top 10 finish at the section meet, senior Lola Hoehne captured 43rd place with a time of 21:44, while Bristol Larsen finished in 65th place with a time of 22:58, Brooklynn Riewer finished in 70th place with a time of 23:14, Zoey St. Germain finished in 105th place with a time of 26:21, Caleigh Pausch finished in 106th place with a time of 27:03 and Madi Perrine finished in 108th place with a time of 27:30.
There were a total of 120 girls who entered the cross country meet and the Hornets took 12th place individually. Barnesville won the meet with 67 points, while United North Central captured the second spot from the section and also qualified for state with 82 points.
On the boys side of the meet, senior Jonah Sharp led the way as he finished in 34th place with a time of 18:59. Eighth grader Coltyn Pender finished in 38th place with a time of 10:06, Talon Hoverson finished in 62nd place with a time of 19:54, Paul Sharp finished in 64th place with a time of 19:55 and Hunter Piekarski finished in 90th place with a time of 21:06.
Hawley won the boys meet with 48 points, while Park Rapids Area also qualified for state as they finished in second place with 56 points. Frazee finished in a tie with Red Lake County for 11th place with 283 points, but fell to 12th place due to tiebreakers. They were just seven points away from finishing in eighth place as there was a log jam of teams from eight place to 13th place with just 12 points separating all of the teams.
