As winter approaches, the Otter Tail County Highway Department is reminding residents to take extra care when removing snow from driveways, sidewalks and private property.
Residents should not push snow into the road or pile it along the right-of-way. Such actions are hazardous to drivers and violate Minnesota Statute 169.42. Violations can result in a misdemeanor charge and fines.
The Otter Tail County Highway Department advises residents to plow from the road toward their property to help keep roads safe and clear. Residents also should avoid piling snow near mailboxes.
“Our goal during winter is to clear roads,” said Cristi Field, maintenance coordinator for the Otter Tail County Highway Department. “By working together and following our snow and ice policy, we can reduce hazards, protect property and maintain safe travel for drivers.”
The department also asks residents to move property, signs and items for sale back from the roadway to protect public safety and prevent property damage.
