Paige Leach looked both ways on Summit Avenue in Detroit Lakes before stepping into the street to walk her neighborhood friend home. The 10-year-old girl was struck by a blue Toyota car. The number of doors are not known and the name of the man driving the car is currently a mystery. The daughter of Dani Leach and step-daughter of Ross Leach drug herself from the middle of the street to the curb. Her left side was scraped with road rash, her eye was blackened and her ankle was broken.

Many would say there is no loss that cuts deeper than that of a child. Michael and Shannon Scolley have felt the weight of that stone. With the trauma came the gift of life Lindsay Redwine. When 9-year-old Ridge Scolley suffered a traumatic brain injury on March 9, his family was asked a seemingly unthinkable question—will they donate his organs? Shannon recalled she and her husband were appalled at the notion when it was first presented. It was their oldest son that changed their minds, and in turn saved the lives of four individuals so far. Shannon explained that when 14-year-old Troy heard that organ donation was an option he felt was without doubt that was the right choice. He was certain that would be what his brother wanted.

It’s called a Universal Laser and it prints and makes designs on wood, plastic, glass and steel, does acrylic work and makes rubber stamps. Don Trieglaff and Tom Watson of Frazee think they have one of only about ten in Northwestern Minnesota, and they’re building a business with it. “We like unique things,” said Watson. Actually, they already have a business in addition to individual jobs, but the business—which now primarily specializes in renting tents—is slated to become more oriented toward the use of the Universal Laser.

A mood of sober frugality prevailed at the Monday, Nov. 13 Frazee school board meeting. It was the first meeting after last week’s defeat of the school district’s proposed excess levy referendum, which would have authorized adding up to $592,839 to the tax levy to make up for lost state aid resulting from declining student enrollment. The referendum was defeated by a 2-1 margin.
