Two teenagers, ages 13 and 14, were rescued after falling through the ice on Straight Lake in Osage Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office received a report of two juvenile males that had fallen through the ice on Straight Lake at 2:51 p.m. Emergency personnel from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, Becker County Dive Team, Carsonville Fire and Rescue, Detroit Lakes Fire Department, North Memorial Ambulance, Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, and the MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR) all responded to assist in getting the juveniles out of the ice.
Information was later relayed that the two youths were floating inside of an Otter Sled they had been sitting in while trying to move across the ice when they fell through. It was determined that the juveniles were attempting to ice fish at the time of the incident.
The DNR was first to arrive with a boat and was able to break through the ice at the Straight Lake access and launch the boat. The DNR Conservation Officer and a Hubbard County Deputy arriving were able to drive the boat and break ice out to the juveniles, get them into the boat and return them to shore.
The juveniles were not injured and were checked by emergency medical services.
The Sheriff’s Office is advising everyone to stay off all area lakes at this time.
