Hornets break school record with 97 points

Jayden Sonnenberg hit a big career milestone last week when she scored her 2,000th career point for the Hornets.

The girls basketball team could not have asked for a better start to the 2025-26 season. In fact, through four games the Hornets have already outscored their opponents by a commanding 318-197 margin, all-while breaking a school record with 97 points in a 97-74 win over Park Rapids Area on Thursday night.

In addition to improving to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference with wins over Barnesville, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Park Rapids Area and Staples-Motley, the Hornets watched as one of their own eclipsed 2,000 career points on Thursday night. Senior Jayden Sonnenberg scored her 2,000th career point as part of a triple-double evening with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 12 steals in a big 97-74 win over the visiting Panthers.

This week the Hornets will have just one game on their scheduled as they host Breckenridge on Friday in HOL action. On Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Hornets will host Perham in yet another HOL Conference game in Frazee.

Brynn Larson registered a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds in Friday’s win over the Cardinals.

Jayden Sonnenberg shot a blistering 59 percent from the field and finished with 28 points to go along with nine rebounds, four steals and six assists as the Frazee Hornets cruised to a 66-42 win over Barnesville in their Heart O’ Lakes Conference and regular season opener over Barnesville on Friday, Nov. 21. 

In addition to Sonnenberg, Katie Courneya reached double figures as she went an impressive 4-5 from behind the 3-point line to finish with 16 points, while Brynn Larson filled the stat sheet for the Hornets with seven points and 11 rebounds.

Also chipping in for the Hornets was Leslie Moore who finished with seven points and five rebounds, Ruby Eckert who finished with five points and six rebounds and Ellie Trieglaff who rounded out the scoring with three points. 

As a team the Hornets shot 41.2 percent from the field and pulled down 36 rebounds, of which 17 were on the offensive end of the court.

Tuesday

Frazee shot just under 54 percent from the field and came away with their second straight commanding HOL Conference win as they defeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 83-50 at home.

The Hornets were led by a pair of dominating performances by seniors Jayden Sonnenberg and Brynn Larson, who combined to outscore the entire Rebel team by themselves with a combined 60 points and 10 rebounds. Sonnenberg led the way with 37 points on just 13-21 shooting, while Larson scored 23 points on just 11-17 shooting from the floor. 

Katie Courneya scored 10 points and a team-high seven assists, while Leslie Moore scored six points, Ruby Eckert scored five points and Ellie Trieglaff rounded out the scoring with two points in the win.

Thursday

Not only did the Frazee Hornets break a school record with 97 points on Thursday night, but senior Jayden Sonnenberg etched her name in the history books with her 2,000th career point.

In a high paced game from the onset, the Hornets were able to outscore the visiting Park Rapids Area Panthers by a score of 97-74 in a game that featured an eye popping 171 combined points.

As a team the Hornets shot just under 44 percent from the field, but knocked down 12 3-pointers and pulled down 20 offensive rebounds.  They also finished with 29 steals and combined 41 rebounds as a team.

Sonnenberg not only scored her 2,000th point in the win, but she finished with a triple-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 12 steals. Katie Courneya finished with 25 points after knocking down five 3-pointers and finished with six assists. 

Brynn Larson also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to go along with six assists and six steals. 

Leslie Moore, Ruby Eckert and Aynslee Johannsen each finished with six points, while Caleigh Pausch finished with three points, while Maggie Blaine and Ellie Trieglaff finished with two points apiece.

Friday

The Hornets continued their domination of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference on Friday night with a commanding 72-31 win over Staples-Motley for their fourth win to start the season.

Throughout the game the Hornets dominated the Cardinals on the boards as Frazee came away with 30 offensive rebounds, which led to a number of second chance points throughout the first half. In all, Frazee came away with 50 total rebounds that made up for shooting just 35 percent from the floor and going just 9-34 from behind the 3-point line.

The Hornets were once again led by the senior duo of Brynn Larson and Jayden Sonnenberg who combined to score 44 points in the win. Larson finished with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds, of which nine came on the offensive end of the court. Sonnenberg finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. She had eight offensive rebounds in the game.

Katie Courneya scored 15 points, while Ellie Trieglaff finished with five points and Leslie Moore and Aynslee Johannsen rounded out the scoring with four points apiece.
