After more than 30 years serving in city government, Vergas Mayor Dean Haarstick adjourned his last monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Vergas City Clerk Julie Lammers didn’t let him go without a well-deserved pat on the back. She recalled many times of which he “went above and beyond to serve the community.” “You were always a call away,” she said. “Thank you for all you’ve done for the city of Vergas.”
Vergas, with a population of about 350, is seeing excellent support of its municipal liquor store from residents and surrounding community members. The off-sale only store is set to make its third deposit of 2020 into city coffers for a total of $30,000. The first fund transfer was for $15,000, which was followed by an additional $10,000 in November. Vergas City Clerk Julie Lammers informed the council that the store was on target with what it needed to close out the year and could transfer another $5,000. The council approved.
The Vergas Event Center remodel is nearing completion. “This has been the easiest going project I’ve worked on,” said Julie Lammers, Vergas city clerk. “It’s amazing how smooth this project has went.” During the Vergas Event Center Committee meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 9, Lammers went on to applaud Summers Construction for giving the city ongoing updates without being prompted throughout the project.

’Twas just weeks before Christmas, and all through Jenny McCorquodale’s house, everyone was packing stockings. McCorquodale spent all day last Tuesday stuffing holiday stockings so she could make her delivery to Lakes Area Crisis Center on Wednesday. Originally, she had planned on doing 200 this year, but in the end she upped the project total to 247 stockings for children, women and men in need.
Special events in the new Frazee Event Center this month will be the beneficiaries hard work and creativity on the parts of several people. The Center is decorated for the Christmas season, as a Community Club project, with proceeds from the Festival of Trees. The stage was adorned Monday with a 10-foot Christmas tree and two six-foot wreaths, all lighted and decorated. Music is the theme.
