The Frazee Hornets made the trek to one of the bigger tournaments in the region on Friday and Saturday as they traveled to Central Cass for the annual Letterman’s Tournament. The tournament featured over 30 teams wrestling over the course of two days. At the end of the tournament the Hornets finished in fifth place as a team with Blake Sonnenberg and Ashton Reller both coming home with runner up honors.
This week the Hornets will travel to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville for a triangular on Tuesday night, before heading to New York Mills for another triangular on Thursday. On Friday the Frazee wrestlers will compete in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference meet in Perham.
Tuesday
The Frazee Hornets traveled to Moorhead on Tuesday night to wrestle a pair of Class AAA schools in Bemidji and Moorhead. Unfortunately for the Hornets the Frazee grappler’s dropped both matches to fall to 5-4 in duals on the season.
In their match against Bemidji the Hornets fell by a score of 46-25 and also dropped a dual against Moorhead by a score of 55-16.
Picking up wins for Frazee against the Moorhead Spuds was Ashton Reller who secured a 16-6 major decision at 127 lbs., Cash Osterman who secured a pin at the 2:51 mark of his 145 lbs. match and Blake Sonnenberg who secured a pin at the 2:58 mark of his 172 lbs. match.

Saturday
Frazee made the trek to North Dakota on Friday and Saturday to participate in the Central Cass Letterman’s Tournament. The Hornets finished the tournament in fifth place as a team with 161.5 points, trailing just Lisbon with 210, Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm with 175, South Border with 173 and Kindred with 164.5 points. A total of 30 teams participated in the large two-day tournament from across the Dakotas and Minnesota.
Blake Sonnenberg and Ashton Reller reached the championship match for the Hornets with both wrestlers taking second place in the tournament. Jack Graham placed third, while Cash Ostermann and Christian Peichel finished their tournament with a pair of fourth place finishes.
Also placing for the Hornets was Caleb Ratz and Tanner Moe who both took sixth place overall.
Reller entered the tournament as the sixth seed and picked up an 11-7 win over Easten Baumgartner of NGS by a score of 11-7. He went on to defeat the third seeded Jared Schilling of South Border by a 5-2 decision, before topping second seeded Sky Kramlich of Carrington by a 5-4 decision in the semi-finals.
Kramlich took a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, following a take down in the first period and an escape in the second period. Reller secured a key take down in the second period with just six seconds remaining in the period to cut the lead to 4-3. In the third and final period, Reller started in the down position and picked up a reversal to take a 5-4 lead with 54 seconds remaining and held on for a 5-4 win.
In the championship match, Reller came out on the short end of a 16-13 decision to the top seed Walker Miller of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm by a 16-13 decision.
Blake Sonnenberg entered the 172 lbs. tournament as the third seed and didn’t give up a point in three straight wins to advance to the championship match. Sonnenberg picked up a 17-0 tech fall, before securing a 5-0 decision and a 7-0 decision over the second seeded Ben Suther of Britton-Hecla to advance to the title match.
He would go on to fall to the champion and top seeded Eli Lyons of Lisbon by an 11-1 major decision.
Graham entered the 189 lbs. tournament as the seventh seed, but secured a tech fall and a decision, before upsetting second seeded Gage Braumgarn of Webster by a 10-0 major decision to advance to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, he fell to the eventual champion Cole Nirschke of South Border by a 13-6 decision. He would go on to secure a tech fall and an 8-5 decision in the third place match to finish the day in third place.
After falling by a tough 8-6 decision in the semi-finals, third seeded Christian Peichel made quick work of his way through the consolation bracket by securing a pair of decisions and a major decision to advance to the third place match against second seeded Gavin Rude of Kindred. Unfortunately, Rude was able to get the best of Peichel in the third place match to hand the Frazee 133 lbs. wrestler his second loss of the tournament and a fourth place finish.
Sixth seeded Cash Ostermann took fourth place in the 145 lbs. tournament after securing three straight decisions to open the tournament, including an exciting 16-13 decision over third seeded Griffin Greenley of Lisbon. Ostermann fell by a 6-1 decision in the semi-finals to second seeded Haeden Jorgenson of WEAR to fall to the consolation bracket. Ostermann won his next match, but fell to Greenley in a rematch by a 14-8 decision in the third place match to finish in fourth place overall.
Tanner Moe wrapped up his 215 lbs. tournament with a sixth place finish after entering the tournament as the 14th seed. He advanced to the semi-finals after securing three straight decisions, before falling by a 7-1 decision to eventual champion Ivan Carruth of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm. He would go on to drop his net two matches, including a 4-3 decision to Dane Jepson of Killdeer in the fifth place match to finish in sixth place.
