The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recommends caution while ice fishing Ventilation is critical to prevent dangerous gas buildup.
As temperatures plummet this weekend, fish houses are great places for some respite from the cold and wind.
Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources want to remind everyone about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning in fish houses and ice shelters.
Always keep vents open when using heaters, generators, or cooking equipment inside your fish house. Proper ventilation is critical to prevent dangerous gas buildup. Check vents and exhaust pipes often and keep them clear of snow and ice, as even partially blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide to build up quickly.
Carbon monoxide has no smell and no warning signs you can detect. People won’t know it’s there until it’s too late.
Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include: headache; dizziness or lightheadedness; nausea; fatigue or confusion.
If you or someone with you starts feeling these symptoms, get into fresh air immediately.
Simple steps like keeping vents clear, ensuring proper ventilation, and maintaining equipment can save lives. Please share this message and help keep others safe this season.
