Nathaniel Martin Kieffer, 47, of rural Frazee, was sentenced on Thursday, Dec. 4, by Becker County District Court Judge Gretchen Thilmony for felony theft.
He was ordered to serve 15 days in jail, with credit for one day served, or 45 days on electronic home monitoring at his own expense.
Judge Thilmony stayed imposition of the sentence; Kieffer’s successful completion of probation will result in a misdemeanor conviction.
He was also ordered to not drink or use nonprescribed drugs. He must complete Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and comply with cognitive behavioral programming as directed.
Kieffer was fined $1,000, plus $970 in restitution and $75 in court fees, and placed on supervised probation for five years.
According to court records, Kieffer was observed putting items into his shopping cart on multiple occasions, Oct. 6, and Oct. 29. During both visits, he purchased bags of gravel, but not the other items in the cart. On Oct. 6, he stole a security system and a cordless nailer totaling $829.98. On Oct. 28, he stole items totaling $1,404.07.
Kieffer admitted to both thefts and agreed to return the merchandise he had stolen after being called by a Menards manager. The nailer had been used and could not be restocked. The security system was not returned.
