The Frazee Hornets fell to 8-6 in duals last week when they dropped a tough 60-4 match to top ranked and defending state champion Staples-Motley. It was the lone match of the week for the Hornets as inclement weather once again forced the postponement of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference tournament. The tournament is now set for Friday at Perham High School. 

In addition to the conference tournament, Frazee will host Mahnomen/Waubun in a dual on Tuesday night and travel to Fosston-Bagley on Thursday night for another dual. 

Jan. 13

Frazee split a triangular against Border West and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

The Hornets won four of the opening five matches of the night, while winning three straight matches from 172-215 lbs. on their way to a 43-26 win over Border West. The Hornets won eight of the 13 matches wrestled with Ashton Bristlin opening things up with a 6-0 pin at 107 lbs. 

Lyric Hoverson won by a 14-9 decision at 121 lbs., before Caleb Ratz won by a fall late in the third period at 127 lbs. and Christian Peichel won by a tech fall at 133 lbs. 

Cash Osterman secured a tech fall of his own at 145 lbs., before Blake Sonnenberg, Jack Graham and Tanner Moe all won by a pin from 172-215 lbs. to put the match out of reach for good.

In their match against LPGEB, the Hornets were unable to get by one of the top teams in Section 6A as they fell by a score of 49-24. Securing wins for the Hornets was Christian Peichel who won by a fall at 133 lbs., as well as Cash Osterman who won by a fall at 145 lbs., Jack Graham who won by a fall at 189 lbs. and Tanner Moe who also won by a pin at 215 lbs.

The Hornets swept an important triangular on Thursday, Jan. 15 against New York Mills by a score of 38-30 and fellow Section 8A foe United Clay Becker by a score of 35-32.

In their match against the Eagles, Frazee trailed 24-4 after the 139 lbs. weight, but went on to win five straight matches by either a fall or forfeit and a sixth straight win by a major decision at 215 lbs. to put the match out of reach 38-24 heading into the heavyweight.

Securing wins for the Hornets was Christian Peichel at 133 lbs. by a major decision, Cash Osterman and Blake Sonnenberg by fall, Liam Hamm and Dylan Sonnenberg by a forfeit and Tanner Moe by a 14-4 major decision.

In a potentially important match in regards to section wrestling seeding, the Hornets defeated the United Clay Becker Badgers by a score of 35-32. The Badgers opened a 20-0 after winning the opening four matches of the dual, before Frazee once again went on a tear through the middle weights with five straight wins from 133 to 160 lbs. to take a 27-20 lead. 

Christian Peichel started Frazee’s run with a pin at 133 lbs., before Josiah Drewes secured a 9-7 decision at 139 lbs. 

Cash Osterman followed with a win by forfeit at 145 lbs., before Liam Hamm gave Frazee its first lead of the dual with a pin at 152 lbs. Blake Sonnenberg made the score 27-20 with a pin at 160 lbs., before UCB followed with a pin of their own at 172 lbs. to cut the lead to 27-26. 

Jack Graham and Tanner Moe followed with back-to-back major decisions at 189 and 215 lbs. to put the match out of reach 35-26. 

UCB won by a fall at heavyweight to end the final score at 35-32.

Thursday

The top ranked and defending state champion Staples-Motley Cardinals lived up to their billing on Thursday night as they upended the Frazee Hornets 60-4. The Cardinals won seven matches by a fall and other by tech fall on their way to the win.

The lone win for the Hornets came at 133 lbs. when 10th ranked Christian Peichel defeated Jackson Odden by a 12-3 major decision. 

Also ranked for the Hornets is Blake Sonnenberg who is seventh at 172 lbs. As a team, the Hornets are receiving votes and are listed as The Guillotine’s Lean and Mean.
