Frazee High School kids are heading back to class just like the good old days. The district started the year with elementary kids attending in person classes and a hybrid system at the high school. The hybrid system split students into groups.
Karen Mitchell’s phone rang in the early hours of Jan. 23. The person on the other end made one of her biggest fears a reality. “My son (Lucas Shawstad) had been in an accident and was being air lifted to a larger hospital,” she explained on her sons’s CaringBridge site, which Karen gave permission to use for the article. The car accident had left the 19-year-old with skull fractures and damage to his spine.
When Julie Bruhn was elected Mayor of Vergas, she became the first female in the city’s history to hold the position. The decision to run for the council, and then mayor had little to do with making history for Bruhn. Instead, she wanted to emulate her father Gordon Dahlgren.

Joseph H. Merseth, presently school superintendent in Rothsay, Minn., has been hired as superintendent of Frazee-Vergas schools. Merseth, 46, will assume his new duties here effective July 1. Merseth, who has been in the Rothsay school system for nine years as superintendent and elementary principal, will replace James Lamont who is retiring after 15 years as Frazee-Vergas schools superintendent.
Bone marrow testing for the benefit of Steve Shapersky, 14-year-old Perham youth with leukemia, will be conducted by the Red Cross on Tuesday, Feb. 14 from 6:45-11:00 a.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the VFW in Perham. Funds are now available to test 70 people.
On Sunday, Feb. 10 at the 100th birthday party, 800 yellow ribbons will be given out by the Frazee VFW as a salute to our troops in the Persian Gulf War. Father Stephen Wagman will give a prayer for our servicemen and women. “God Bless the USA” will be sung by Jerry Bellefeuille who has two brothers in the Gulf War.

Sno-Ball Royal Court—Highlight of Sno-Ball Week at Frazee High School was the coronation program held Friday morning. Prince Mike Dretsch, a junior, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dretsch; King Brian Mickelson, a senior, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Mickelson; Queen Dorothy Nistler, a senior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nistler; and Princess Lori Mayer, a junior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ordie Mayer.
Sno-Ball was sponsored by the FFA, FHA and Student Council. Other events held during the week included a snow sculpture contest, pep meeting, dance, pie eating contest, tug-of-war and egg contest. Dagne Kangas was the overall chairman of Sno-Ball Week, and Barb Moss was in charge of activities.
A Burlington Northern freight train crashed into and destroyed a car that was stalled on the track about five miles west of Frazee Wednesday night. The automobile was driven by Richard E. Smith, 21, of rural Detroit Lakes. Smith’s car became hung up on a township road R.R. crossing and it was demolished by the train about 20 minutes later.
