Ten wrestlers place at conference tournament

Christian Peichel and Jack Graham were crowned as champions and five Hornets reached the championship match of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference tournament on Friday.

The Hornets placed fourth overall with 10 wrestlers placing in the top six overall.

Frazee also secured a pair of Section 8A wins last week to improve to 10-6 overall. Currently the Hornets are ranked in the Lean and Mean according to the Guillotine state rankings with Peichel currently tanked 10th at 133 lbs. and Blake Sonnenberg ranked seventh at 172 lbs. 

This week the Hornets will travel to Perham for a dual against the Yellowjackets at 4 p.m., before hosting a quadrangular against Minnewaska, Detroit Lakes and Grand Rapids on Thursday night. 

The section tournament will get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Tuesday

Frazee won eight of 13 matches and came away with a 35-22 win over Mahnomen-Waubun at home on Tuesday night. The Hornets won matches in bunches over the Thunderbirds as Ashton Reller put the Hornets on the scoreboard with a tech fall at 121 lbs. 

Caleb Ratz followed with a tough 6-5 decision over Eli Pazdernik at 127 lbs., before Christian Peichel followed with a pin at 133 lbs. increase the Hornet lead to 14-9. Liam Hamm and Cash Osterman made it five straight wins when they secured back-to-back pins at 139 and 145 lbs. respectively. 

After a pair of Thunderbird wins at 152 and 160 lbs., Blake Sonnenberg, Jack Graham and Tanner Moe put the match out of reach with three straight decisions from 172-215 lbs. to put the Hornets in front 35-16.

Thursday

Frazee improved to 10-6 on the season and picked up an important win in Section 8A on Thursday night as the Hornets defeated Fosston-Bagley 36-27.

The Hornets dominated the upper weights with the Hornets trailing 21-14 heading into the 160 lbs. weight. Blake Sonnenberg picked up a key pin over Gunner Nolan at 160 lbs., before Pacin Jager won by a 10-4 decision at 172 lbs. to put the Hornets in front 23-21. Jack Graham followed with a win by forfeit and Tanner Moe followed with a pin at 215 lbs. to put the match out of reach with the Hornets in front 36-21.

Friday

After a few failed attempts that were postponed due to inclement weather, the Frazee Hornets made the trek to Perham on Friday for the annual Heart O’ Lakes Conference Tournament. As a team the Hornets took fourth place overall with 137.5 points with top ranked Staples-Motley placing first with 233 points. Perham placed second with 213 points, while DGF took third with 145.5 points, Frazee took fourth with 137.5 points, Pelican Rapids was fifth with 87.5 points, Barnesville was sixth with 86.5 points and Park Rapids Area was seventh with 33.5 points. 

Individually, five Hornets reached the championship match with Christian Peichel and Jack Graham coming home with championship honors. 

Peichel took first place at 133 lbs. after winning by a decision over Zayn Waker of Perham in the opening round by a score of 10-5. In the semi-finals, Peichel defeated Jackson Odden of Staples-Motley by an 11-2 major decision to advance to the championship match.

In the finals, Peichel overwhelmed Dawson Hoban of DGF by securing a tech fall by a score of 20-5 to capture first place. 

Graham took first place at 189 lbs. after securing a 10-2 major decision over John Steeke of Perham in the semi-finals, before defeating Trystan Larson of Perham by a pin in the championship match. 

At 121 lbs., Ashton Reller took second place after winning by a tech fall over Sam Schmitz of DGF in the semi-finals, before falling to Caden Kramer of Staples-Motley by a fall in the championship match. 

Blake Sonnenberg took second place at 160 lbs. after he picked up a 2-0 decision over Brody Wacker of Perham in the opening round and a 16-0 tech fall over Zander Deutsch of DGF in the semi-finals. In the championship match, Sonnenberg fell to top ranked Colbe Tappe of Staples-Motley by a pin at 2:33 to finish in second place. 

Tanner Moe took second place at 215 lbs. after defeating Zach Tabatt of Staples-Motley by a 4-1 decision in the semi-finals, before falling to Class AA fifth ranked Eli Roiko of Perham by a tech fall in the championship match. 

Also placing for the Hornets was Ashton Bristlin in sixth place at 107 lbs., Caleb Ratz in fourth place at 127 lbs., Liam Hamm in fifth place at 139 lbs., Cash Osterman in third place at 145 lbs. and Jan Carlos Rodello in fifth place at 285 lbs.
