The Frazee Hornets regained first place in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference by a half of game with a thrilling 80-74 win over the Perham Yellowjackets on Friday night. The win not only gave the Hornets a bit of revenge after falling to Perham earlier this season, but could also have important implications atop a competitive Heart O’ Lakes Conference and Section 8AA tournament.

The Hornets are now in first place in the conference with a record of 11-3 in HOL play, which is a half of game ahead of Perham and a full game in front of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton with just two conference games remaining on their schedule.

Frazee has won 12 times in their past 13 games and improved to 17-3 overall. This week the Hornets will travel to East Grand Forks on Tuesday, host Henning on Thursday night and travel to Pelican Rapids on Friday in a return to conference action.

The Hornets will wrap up their regular season next week when they host Hawley as part of a boys-girls double header on Tuesday, Feb. 17 and will host Wadena-Deer Creek to round out their regular season on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Monday

Jayden Sonnenberg came just two points shy of breaking the Frazee single game scoring record as the senior scored 41 points and finished a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line as the Hornets defeated Lake Park-Audubon by a score of 76-64 on Monday night. Sonnenberg added nine rebounds and a pair of assists as part of a big night from the floor for the Frazee senior.

In addition to Sonnenberg, Ruby Eckert had a big night down low for the Hornets as she finished with eight points and five rebounds, while Brynn Larson scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds for Frazee. Leslie Moore and Katie Courneya each scored six points, Aynslee Johannsen scored five points and Analise Olson rounded out the scoring with two points for the Hornets.

Friday

Frazee led 76-74 with about a minute to go when Perham missed an open layup and gave the Hornets a chance for a bit of breathing room. After running a bit of clock, senior Jayden Sonnenberg drove the lane and hit the lay up to give Frazee a 78-74 lead with about 30 seconds to go.
The Hornets would hold on for an 80-74 win, which not only put them back into first place atop the Heart O’ Lakes Conference, but could also prove to be an important win when the Section 8AA tournament opens up on Thursday, Feb. 26.

Frazee is currently 11-3 in the conference and holds a half game lead over Perham at 10-3 and a full game lead over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at 10-4 with two conference games remaining on their schedule.

As a team the Hornets shot nearly 51 percent from the floor and pulled down 41 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end of the court.

Eight Hornets reached the scoring column on Friday night with Sonnenberg leading the way with a double-double by scoring 30 points to go along with 13 rebounds and six assists. Brynn Larson also reached double figures with 17 points, while Aynslee Johannsen scored nine, Leslie Moore scored eight, Ellie Trieglaff scored six, Katie Courneya scored four, and Analise Olson and Ruby Eckert rounded out the scoring with three points apiece.

Head coach Trey Hensius said the win over Perham was a big game for the Hornets and credited Johannsen for knocking down a 3-pointer to give Frazee a bit of momentum in the contest.
