Perham Education Association recently announced that Perham High School teacher Cory Solberg has been named the PEA Teacher of the Year.
In the announcement, PEA President Paul Belka said the distinguished honor reflects Solberg’s dedication to students, commitment to professional excellence, and the meaningful impact he makes each day in the classroom and beyond.
Solberg is in his 27th year with Independent School District 549, and in his 34th year overall. He said he was humbled and honored to receive the recognition.
“We have such a great teaching staff in our district. This represents a collective effort of colleagues,” Solberg said. “I am truly grateful for every day that I have, and teaching makes those days very rewarding.”
Belka said Solberg’s passion for education, his ability to inspire learners and the supportive environment he creates serve as a model for educators across the district.
“Solberg’s steady leadership has made a lasting impact on the lives of the young people he teaches every day,” Belka said. “This honor recognizes not only Cory’s work in the classroom, but also the respect he has earned from colleagues, families, and students.”
Solberg said his favorite part of the profession is caring—caring about students and the staff he works with.
“It has not always been an easy journey, but that’s why it’s a journey,” Solberg said. “Every day is different. You have a plan, but it can go in many directions. Kids will always surprise you, which is heartwarming; that is what makes it worthwhile.”
Whether on the golf course or in the classroom, Solberg has impacted many students who have walked the halls of Perham High School during his career. Those relationships continue as students move on after graduation.
“It is always a positive relationship that has been built. Whether it is from teaching or coaching, I love to see what path these kids take after high school,” Solberg said. “It’s fun to run into them and get life updates.”
Solberg said he is grateful for the impact students have had on him during his teaching and coaching career.
“The longer you teach, the more you start to see the larger picture,” Solberg said. “To me, it’s always about positive relationships, encouragement, and helping kids believe in themselves.”
Solberg also credited the staff at Perham High School, saying he enjoys teaching alongside his colleagues, who make a positive impact on him every day.
