Lucas Shawstad recently celebrated his 20th birthday with the ability to talk, walk and dig back into his longterm memory to recall moments of years past. Those hallmarks may seem like small potatoes for most 20 year olds, but Lucas shouldn’t be alive. “Lucas has good days and bad,” his mom Karen Mitchell said. “He’s been able to attend therapies, so we take every bit of positivity and hold onto it.” The Frazee resident has been by her son’s side since he was in a severe vehicle accident in Montana on Jan. 23.

The Frazee Fly Girls wrapped up their season with another trip to the state jazz competition last Friday afternoon. The Fly Girls finished in a three way tie for third place and ended up placing fifth due to tiebreakers.

The Vergas Park Board expanded its idea for a recreational sporting site in the city to include pickleball courts, a basketball court, playground and possibly a Frisbee golf course. The main focus that spurred the idea of a sports area started with installing pickleball courts. The popularity of the game has exploded nationwide and is a cross between badminton, table tennis and tennis.

He cited the trend toward a full-time legislature and other personal factors as reasons for his decision.
