Hazel Mickelson and her family made history this past week. The Frazee family that is known for successful turkey operations, real estate development and volunteering was named the first ever, Citizen of the Season by the Frazee Area Community Club. The Citizen of the Season award is a new way for the community club, and community, to nominate and ultimately recognize a person or family that has made Frazee a stronger community through volunteering and leadership.

Frazee High School freshman Hailey Selly was recently presented with the Most Valuable Teammate award from the Minnesota State High School League. When teammates were asked to describe her, the words included: considerate, lively, honest, dedicated, cheerful, passionate, perky, funny and confident. The testimonies from teammates were echoed by her dance coach Katrina Courneya.

Vergas residents have requested the planning commission address all terrain-vehicles riding on private property. During its monthly meeting on Monday, March 22, commission members were made aware the some ATV drivers are utilizing people’s laws to come into the city. It was noted state statues do not permit ATVs on the roadway, unless a city ordinance is in place to allow them.

April 8, 1991

The Reverend David B. Franzmeier of Sauk Rapids, Minn. has accepted a call to serve as the pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee. Rev. Franzmeier’s installation will be held on Sunday evening, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the church. He will officially assume his duties on May 1. Pastor Franzmeier, 50, was reared on a farm in southern Minnesota. He is a graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri (1968), and is married to Linda (nee Killeen).

Eileen Biersdorf, school superintendent in Perham, has resigned effective June 30. Biersdorf was named superintendent July 1, 1989. She did not give a reason for her resignation and said she has no definite plans for the future. Biersdorf moved to Perham from Green River, Wyo. where she was director of curriculum and special services.

The federal minimum wage increased by 45 cents an hour on Monday to $4.25. About 3 million Americans earn the minimum wage, and millions of higher-paid workers may benefit as well when the minimum was increased from $3.80 an hour.

April 1, 1976

The United Methodist Church of Vergas will hold a dedication service for a new addition to the church on Sunday, April 4 at 2 p.m. Invited speakers for the deception program are Minnesota Conference Bishop Wayne K. Clymer of Minneapolis and District Superintendent Delton Krueger of Alexandria. Rev. Robert Zeimes is pastor of the Vergas Methodist Church which has 138 members. Rev. Zeimes came here in July of 1973 and also serves the Frazee Methodist congregation.

Frazee Cub Scout Pack 690 took first place in the Manywaters District 1976 Scout Show held March 27 at the Detroit Lakes Armory. The Frazee Pack has two dens totaling 16 boys. The Cub Scouts told the story of the Liberty Bell at the show and worked very hard to put on a good demonstration.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Evergreen is sponsoring a Lenten Open House on the evening of April 7th. All members, former members, friends of St. Paul, and especially those without a church home, are cordially invited to attend.
