Becker County Environmental Services provided an update to the organics program, which rolled out in September of 2025.

“We are excited to share the impact you have helped make in our community,” Recycling Coordinator Todd Kunkel said in a press release. “We collected 15.73 tons between September and December 2025.”

That’s 31,453 pounds of food waste.

Average collection per week was more than one ton.

Most of the organics collection was around Detroit Lakes. Over the winter, the program expanded to Frazee, Lake Park, and Audubon, and an expansion to the Cormorant area is anticipated this summer.
