0Golfers take fourth at HOL opener

The boys golf team traveled to Iowa for some early season rounds of golf earlier this spring.
The Frazee boys golf team was fortunate enough to go on a spring trip from April 1-3.
With the support of the booster club and the school the Hornets traveled a bit south to get in some golf before the regular season started. The weather was not quite what they had hoped for, but it was still great to get out.

The first day after a long day in the van the Hornets played the Tournament Club of Iowa. It was a beautiful course with some extremely challenging holes. As it was getting dark and the wind was howling in their face the team stepped up the 17th hole, a 600-yard behemoth with a lake on the left and out of bounds on the right.
The 18th hole played back into the clubhouse and was just about as long with the lake on the other side.
After a great night at a VRBO the team loaded up and headed to Indian Creek Golf Club. Another crisp day and the wind was blowing pretty good but a beautiful facility again. They play Korn Ferry tour events there so you know it is challenging. The guys played very well. There was a 220-yard par three that three guys took driver out because the wind was blowing so hard and barely got it over the green.

The Frazee Hornets opened the Heart O’ Lake Conference season at Whitetail Run in Wadena.
Frazee finished up the day playing the Grayhawk course. It was another challenge, but the guys were up for it. A fun time was had by all and the camaraderie was amazing. These guys are tight and this will only help us this season. Seeing these young men in a different setting made head coach Jason Reierson a proud coach as he said represented Frazee well.
Reierson said the team cannot say enough thank yous to all the people that made it happen. The annual tournament has had a great turn out with all the great hole sponsors and golfers, which helped them make this incredible journey.
Ironically, perhaps, the team was welcomed back with a foot of snow so the trip had perfect timing. Lifelong memories for all involved.
Last week Frazee traveled to Wadena for the HOL opener at Whitetail Run golf course. It was a beautiful morning that turned a bit windy as the day went on, but a good first day of golf. With high hopes of competing in a very tough conference the guys were excited to play.
Frazee took six golfers to the meet with four of their scores counting toward the team score. Playing number one for the Hornets was last year’s state entrant Ben Reierson. He did not play as well as he hoped, but was happy to get back out and compete. He shot 79 which was good enough for fourth place on the day. He had one really bad hole carding a triple, but followed it up with a birdie to parlay some of the damage.
Golfing number two was Cayden Wallin, a senior with high aspirations. He just couldn’t get anything consistently going all day. He ended with an 89 which placed him in 18th place for the day. Wallin will come through for the Hornets this season. He is just putting a bit too much pressure on himself right now.
In the third spot was Adam Vigen. He tied for 11th with an 87. He had a great mindset going into the day and Reierson said he thinks Vigen wishes he could take a couple shots back and the team will see more from him as this season continues.
Playing the fourth spot was another sophomore Brodie Mausbach. He has worked very hard on his game this off season. He spends a bunch of time in the simulator and knows his swing. He had three triple bogeys that hurt his score for the day. Once he tunes in outside golf he will be much improved. He shot 93 on the day. The tight front nine got him in trouble.
Playing in the fifth spot was senior Tyler Lindell. As the team was loading Reierson said he noticed he had taken his driver out of his bag. Lindell has been playing for a while for Reierson and he knows his game. He is also adjusting to some new irons he bought recently. He started out like gangbusters with two pars and a bogey. Then things got rough and couldn’t steady the ship. He ended with a 108 on the day.
Frazee’s sixth man was another sophomore, Hunter Piekarski. Hunter has improved so much since last year. He played a bunch of golf last summer. His aim was off in some parts of his game, which led to a few more shots than he would have liked. He held on to keep it under 100 shooting a 99. Reierson thinks he gained a bunch of confidence as the day went on and that score will continue to improve. After the meet he headed out to the golf course to work more on the things that went poorly. Reierson said he loves to see that dedication.
The Hornets ended the day in fourth as a team and were just seven strokes from second. Reierson said the team goal is to shoot under 330 in every tournament so they have a ways to go, but it was the first meet of the year and the Hornets gave themselves a bit of slack.
