0After a long hiatus from the links, the Junior High and Junior Varsity Boys’ golf team are back in the “swing” of things again.
Four and a half weeks of hitting the ball 10-feet ill prepares one for the frustration of actually getting on a course and seeing where it will land. With that said, the young men surprised the junior high old coach. On April 22, they traversed an unforgiving 18 holes on the grounds of Perham Lakeside.
Ashton Reller and Ashton Bristlin lead the way for Frazee with scores of 95 and 102 respectively. Reller was hitting his long irons well. This set him up for shorter chips onto the greens. Bristlin crafted his drives with precision, setting up for an easier second stroke. Conditions were extremely windy with fast greens humbling the best of golfers.
The next day, Ashton Bristlin scored a 47 at Frazee’s home course which was sixth overall among 56 golfers. Followed by Ashton Reller and Tristan Maijala whose totals were 52 and 53, placing 11th and 16th respectively. Once again, wind was a factor as well as a rapidly dropping thermometer. The best part of both days was that all the golfers were having fun.
They were finding success and humility, usually on the same hole. As a coach, it is joyful to share in those moments where a young man connects with a drive or places a ball two feet from the hole from 165 yards out with his 7-iron. It is equally satisfying to see a golfer the day after a meet wanting to work on their game to avoid making mistakes that cost them a stroke or two the day before. The coaches foresee a number of these young men continuing their efforts to surprise not only their coaches, but themselves as well.
