Summer reading program for youth, teens

This June, the Detroit Lakes Public Library is inviting young readers to step into a literary time machine with Lake Agassiz Regional Library’s “Reading is Timeless” Summer Reading Program, including a packed lineup of free events and activities for youth. Special thanks to the Detroit Lakes Public Library’s Summer Reading Program lead sponsor, the Detroit Lakes Library Foundation. 

The following activities will be offered at the Detroit Lakes Public Library in June:

Book Bingo: Summer 

Reading Kick-Off

Thursday, June 4 at 2 p.m.

The Detroit Lakes Public Library is kicking off the Summer Reading Program with Book Bingo. Collect your summer reading log and win prizes by playing Book Bingo, including books, graphic novels, t-shirts, and more.

Conductor Jack’s Kids 

Dance Party

Monday, June 8 at 4 p.m.

Are you ready to rock out at your library this summer? Conductor Jack is bringing his instruments and some puppet friends for a fun dance party. Conductor Jack is an Emmy Award winning children’s educator, YouTuber and entertainer. The program is offered free-of-charge, thanks in part to funding from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. 

Mary Lewis’s Oddities 

at the Becker 

County Museum

Thursday, June 18 at 2 p.m.

Join volunteers at the Becker County Museum for an intriguing presentation that explores a collection of unusual artifacts such as the two-headed calf, the world’s largest ball of store string, and more.

Visit Van Gogh 

with Kirstin Bird

Thursday, June 25 at 2 p.m.

Learn about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and paint your own version of his famous painting Starry Night with Young at Art.

The Summer Reading Program is offered to youth and teens in communities in Becker, Clay, Clearwater, Mahnomen, Norman, Polk, and Wilkin counties. Beginning June 1, participants can read to win prizes as well as attend educational and entertaining programs at their local library or library LINK Site. Those interested in participating are encouraged to stop by their local library or LINK Site to pick up a reading log beginning June 1.
