The Frazee Hornets snapped a 10 game losing streak and will enter the Section 5A tournament with a bit of momentum on their side after securing a 2-0 win over Hawley in extra innings last week. The win improves the Hornets to 8-13 overall and 5-8 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference as they look to defend their Section 5A title this week.

Seedings for the tournament were not released at the time of press, but the Hornets should get the third or fourth seed in the sub section tournament.

Monday

Frazee managed to outhit Sebeka by a 9-8 margin, but came out on the short end of a 7-3 game against the Trojans on Monday night.

Sebeka scored single runs in the first and second innings, before breaking the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with a five run inning thanks to a fielder’s choice, an error, bases loaded walk and two-run double to put the Trojans up by a score of 7-1.

Frazee made a game of it in the top of the seventh inning when Karson Krause connected with an RBI double and Noah Mekalson followed with an RBI single of his own. The Hornets were able to get a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs, but were unable to get any closer as they came out on the short end of a 7-3 loss to the Trojans.

Krause and Mekalson led the way offensively with three hits apiece.

Dawson Lyman took the loss on the mound as he went six innings and gave up eight hits, seven runs of which three were earned. He walked three batters and struck out four hitters in the game.

Tuesday

A two out Paul Sharp single in the top of the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie and snapped a 10 game losing streak for the Frazee Hornets in their regular season finale on Tuesday night.

Conner Erickson throws out a runner at first base during a recent game in Frazee

Karson Krause led off the top of the eighth inning with a triple, before Noah Mekalson was hit by a pitch. After Blake Sonnenberg was hit by a pitch to load up the bases with no outs, the Nuggets caught a bit of a break when a Conner Erickson line drive to third base was caught, which allowed Hawley to double up Krause at third base. That’s when Sharp connected with an RBI single to bring Mekalson across the plate and Sonneneberg also scored on the play on an error to make the score 2-0. It would be all the support the Hornet pitchers would need as they were brilliant on the mound by giving up just two hits in the game to secure a 2-0 win.

In fact, Krause retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced and allowed just three base runners the entire game. Krause needed just 85 pitchers to go the distance and gave up two hits, no walks and struck out seven batters. He also led the way offensively with four hits, while Erickson and Sharp finished with a pair of hits apiece.

The win improves the Hornets to 8-13 overall and 5-8 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference as they gear up for the sub section tournament which kicks off this week.
