Hornets win silver bracket title at Hawley Tournament

The Frazee Hornets came home with the silver bracket championship on Saturday in the annual Hawley Tournament. The Hornets opened the day with a pair of tough losses to Border West (25-15, 25-20) and Hillcrest Lutheran (25-15, 25-15), before picking up two straight wins over Badger-Greenbush-Middle River (25-18, 25-9) and Roseau (21-25, 25-15, 15-13) to advance to the silver bracket championship.
Frazee went on to sweep the Hancock Owls 25-21, 25-15 in the silver bracket championship to come home with the crown. They ended the tournament with a 3-2 record.
The Hawley Tournament came on the heels of a tough 3-2 loss to Pelican Rapids on Thursday night to fall to 1-1 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference.
This week the Hornets will get into the thick of their conference schedule as they will travel to Breckenridge on Tuesday, before hosting Barnesville on Thursday.

Frazee looked well on its way to a commanding sweep over Pelican Rapids on Thursday night after the Hornets dominated the Vikings 25-11, 25-7 in the opening two sets of the HOL Conference contest. Unfortunately, Pelican Rapids regrouped and narrowly won the next two sets 25-23, 26-24 to force a fifth and decisive set. Pelican Rapids was able to win the fifth set 15-11 to edge Frazee 3-2 and hand the Hornets their first conference loss of the season.
Ruby Eckert continued her dominant junior campaign on the offensive end with a team-high 18 kills, while adding nine aces and 22 digs.
Addison Aschnewitz also reached double figures with 12 kills and Bentley O’Hara chipped in with nine.
Ella Ullrich led the team in assists with 24, while Jordan Nelson finished with 17. Kaija Aschnewitz led the team with 24 digs, Katie Courneya finished with 19 and Neveah Wirth and Ullrich each finished with 14 digs in the loss.
