The Frazee football team got back into the win column for a memorable 27-24 overtime win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Friday night.
“If you left early you definitely missed a heck of a show,” said head coach Russ Hackel.
Capping off a festive homecoming week in Frazee, the Hornets played well throughout the early going on Friday night, especially on the defensive end of the ball. However, the Wolverines were able to open the game up a bit by going into more of a spread offense with their backup quarterback, who was just a freshman, and were able to get back into the game.
However, turnovers proved to be the difference for the Hornets as they threw three costly interceptions that gave Wadena-Deer Creek a short field and helped them tie the game at 21-21 at the end of regulation.
The Hornets were able to hold the Wolverines to just a field goal in overtime, while finding the end zone themselves to come away with the 27-24 overtime win.
Despite the turnovers, Hackel said it was a nice and big win for the Hornets, especially on homecoming as the team was able to make enough plays when they needed to come out on top.
“We held our ground and made some plays when we needed to,” he said.
This week the 2-4 Frazee Hornets will travel to Lake Park-Audubon in a must-win game if they want to host a first round playoff game in two weeks. The Hornets are currently in fifth place in the QRF standings and trail Warroad for fourth place in the standings. Wins in their final two weeks could potentially leave Frazee in the fourth seed and a home playoff game.
Lake Park-Audubon is currently 4-2 on the season and average 23.5 points per game on offense, while surrendering 19.8 points per game on defense. Last week they fell to Breckenridge by a score of 42-13.
The Hornets are currently 2-4 on the season and average 16.8 points per game on offense, while surrendering 23 points per game on defense.
Frazee will travel to Otter Tail Central on Wednesday, Oct. 21 to wrap up their regular season against the Bulldogs.
