Notes from the Chief
Welp…I am going to count the first crop of hay as done. There are a couple of small patches that dad cut that still need to be baled, but the main is done.
Thursday afternoon I rolled up bale No. 881. That is quite a hay crop for us as I think most farmers are seeing a nice crop this year. That is quite a jump from the 467 last year. We should have plenty of hay and might be able to spare a few bales here and there for some friends if needed.
We have had some major breakdowns this year too. New sprockets and bearings in the round baler. Both wobble gear boxes on the 1499 haycutter had to be modified and bolted back into place. The air conditioning in both haycutters need attention every so often.
A wheel fell off one of the hay rakes. Dad’s 4020 got a flat tire, luckily, we had a spare. We picked up two more 18.4-34 tires on John Deere rims this week for a couple more spares.
The other rake picked up a flat tire on Thursday. That one will have to wait and get changed in the field. The fuel petcock on the 1495 haycutter got plugged with sludge. We took the gas tank off and cleaned that out and added a short stub on the petcock to hopefully prevent a repeat.
Second crop will start in a week or so. We won’t be cutting as much as some fields only get cut once. The main hay field at the home farm will get cut for sure, the others may be rotated for pasture if we can get some fencing done. The corn is looking alright with the continued moisture, we will chop some of the corn and hopefully have enough to combine to get corn as a grain to feed to the calves in the fall.
I previously said we had 410 round bales last year not 467. I was wrong and I, unlike my ex, can admit when I am wrong.
Have a nice week.
