Frazee to host Breckenridge in their lone action of the week

The Frazee Hornets got their New Year off to a rousing start as the Hornets defeated Park Rapids Area by a score of 62-58 in overtime on Tuesday night. 

Alex Helmers tied the game late with a 3-pointer to end regulation, before the Hornets were able to get their second win of the season in overtime. 

On Friday the Hornets fell to 2-6 on the season when they lost to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton by a score of 68-48. 

This week the Hornets will host Breckenridge on Thursday night in their lone action of the week. 

Dec. 29

Frazee traveled to Thief River Falls on Dec. 29 in their final game of the 2022 portion of their schedule. 

After trailing by a score of 36-22 at halftime, the Hornets and Prowlers got in a bit of a track meet in the final 18 minutes of action as they combined for 76 points in the second half alone. Ultimately, the Hornets fell by a score of 74-60, but matched Thief River Falls 38-38 in the second half.

Offensively the Hornets were led by a balanced scoring attack with Adam Vigen and Alex Helmers each scoring 11 points, while Gage Post scored 10 points and Zach Longfors added 8. 

Asher Blaine scored 7 points, while Nathan Longfors scored 6 and Carter Sonnenberg rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Tuesday

Alex Helmers hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to tie Frazee’s first game of 2023 at 56-56 and force overtime on Tuesday night. The Hornets were able to hold off the Panthers in overtime to come away with a 62-58 win at home. 

“We got down early, but we never quit,” said head coach Ryan Vigen. “Very proud of our effort tonight.”

Zach Longfors and Kale Ovsak were clutch at the free throw line as they went 4-4 down the stretch to hold off the Panthers.

Frazee trailed by a score of 35-31 at halftime, but were able to hit several key shots down the stretch to pull away for the win. As a team the Hornets shot 48 percent from the floor and hit six 3-pointers. They also went an impressive 8-10 from the free throw line. 

Seven Hornets reached the scoring column with Carter Sonnenberg leading the way with 18 points. He also finished with a team high 7 rebounds. 

Adam Vigen finished with 10 points and a team high 7 assists, while Kale Ovsak also reached double figures with 10 points of his own. 

Asher Blaine just missed out on reaching double figures as he finished with 9 points, while Zach Longfors scored 7 points, Alex Helmers scored 6 points and Nathan Longfors rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Friday

Frazee hit eight 3-pointers, but ultimately couldn’t overcome 27 turnovers as the Hornets fell to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in Heart O’ Lakes Conference action by a score of 68-48 on Friday night.

As a team the Hornets shot 33.3 percent from  the field and went 8-25 from behind the 3-point line. Unfortunately, the Rebels were able to control the paint as they finished with a 38-16 advantage down low.

Carter Sonnenberg once again had a solid night from the field as he finished with 14 points to go along with a team high 8 rebounds. He went 6-9 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Asher Blaine also finished with 14 points after he went 5-10 from the field, including going 3-6 from behind the 3-point line. 

Alex Helmers finished with 9 points, while Zach Longfors scored 4 points, Kale Ovsak scored 3 points, while Adam Vigen and Nathan Longfors rounded out the scoring with 2 points apiece.
