The Frazee Hornets wrestling team didn’t just leave their mark on the section individual tournament on Saturday, they left a path of destruction in Crookston. Eight Frazee wrestlers qualified for the state tournament and the team was just a few points away in true second matches from having two other wrestlers punch their ticket to St. Paul.
Cash Osterman, Blake Sonnenberg, Bailey Peichel, Tyler Moe, Jake Nagel, Preston Mayfield. Max Rue and Xander Kohler will compete at the state individual wrestling tournament this week as the Hornets wrapped up one of their best individual tournaments in a number of years.
In the finals, Osterman upset top seeded and eighth ranked Ian Phrakonkham of Fosston/Bagley. Osterman took a 4-2 lead after the first period when he secured a takedown and earned a two-point near fall with just 25 seconds remaining in the period. However, Phrakonkham earned a reversal with 22 seconds remaining to make the score 4-2. Phrakonkham dominated most of the wrestling in the second period as he secured a pair of two-point near falls, along with a reversal and three-point near fall. Osterman earned a reversal of his own, but entered the third period trailing by a score of 11-6.
Osterman started the final period in the down position and secured a reversal with 1:31 left in the match, before flipping Phrakonkham to his back and winning the match by a fall at the 4:37 mark to win the 106 lbs. championship.
At 120 lbs., Sonnenberg fell to the eventual champion Conrad Koll of United North Central in the semi-finals, before working his way through the consolation bracket and earning a true second match when he pinned Kadin Harwood of Fosston-Bagley in the third place match.
In one of the most exciting third periods of the day, Sonnenberg took a 1-0 lead into the final period and was able to hold on for a 7-5 decision over Owen Lund of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River to win second place. Sonnenberg actually trailed 5-3 with just 1:22 remaining in the match when Lund earned a reversal and three-point near fall. However, the seventh grader made a reversal of his own and earned a two-point near fall with just 1:17 to go in the match to take a 7-5 lead. He was able to ride Lund out for the remainder of the match to punch his ticket to state.
Bailey Peichel punched his ticket to the state tournament after defeating Wyatt Olson of United North Central in the true second match at 138 lbs. Peichel took an 8-4 lead heading into the final period, but Olson earned an escape to start the period and Peichel was called for two late stalling warnings to earn 2 more points, but the Hornet wrestler was still able to come out on top by a score of 8-7.
The close finish in the true second match came on the heels of a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the championship match to Zach Thompson of Fosston-Bagley. Tied at 2-2 heading into the third period, Peichel chose the bottom position in the third period and earned a quick reversal to take a 4-2 lead. Thompson made the score 4-3 when he earned an escape at the 1:38 mark of the third period and took the lead for good when he earned a takedown as time expired to overtake Peichel for the section title.
At 152 lbs., Tyler Moe pinned his way to the championship match, before falling to Carter Coauette of Crookston by a 5-1 decision to take second place.
Jake Nagel, who is currently ranked second in the state at 160 lbs., punched his ticket to the state tournament with an 11-0 major decision win over Zach Davidson in the semi-finals, before securing a pin over Blake McMullen of Mahnomen/Waubun in the finals at the 2:46 mark of the championship match to take first place.
Preston Mayfield made it three straight weight classes with a state tournament berth for the Hornets as he captured first place at 170 lbs. Mayfield secured a tech fall shortly into the second period over Hunter Blilie of Barnesville in the semi-finals, before pinning Eli Roiko of United North Central at the 5:56 mark of the championship match to come away with the individual championship.
Not to be outdone, Max Rue punched his ticket to the state tournament with a pin over Cooper Hasbargen of United North Central in the true second match. Rue fell to Hunter Knutson of Crookston by a 4-1 decision in the championship match, before the Frazee senior was able to pin Hasbargen at just the 1:08 mark of the true second match to qualify for state at 182 lbs.
The final Hornet to qualify for state was Xander Kohler who defeated Tim Wells of Barnesville in the semi-finals by a 4-2 overtime decision by earning a takedown with just 24 seconds left to advance to the finals. Kohler fell to second ranked Marcus Peterson of United North Central at the 5:06 mark of the match, but was trailing just 3-0 at the time of the fall.
Kohler made quick work of Alex Hagen of Fosston-Bagley in the true second match as he secured a pin at the 1:03 mark of the match to come away with the second place finish.
Two other Frazee wrestlers came up just short of advancing to state when they fell in the true second match.
At 126 lbs., Brady Borah just missed out on a chance to state after he fell to Zach Hendrickson of United North Central in the true second match by a 9-1 major decision.
Cade Nagel also just missed out on making a return to state as he fell to top seeded Aiden Wolfe of Fosston/Bagley by a 3-0 decision in the true second match. All of the scoring in the match came in the second period when Wolfe made an escape and earned a takedown. Nagel chose the bottom position in the third period but was not able to get the escape.
At 195 lbs., Daniel Graham wrapped up his Frazee wrestling career with a third place finish after he won a 5-2 decision over Hunter Kresl of Crookston in the third place match. Graham finished his senior year with a record of 21-9 overall.
In addition to the state qualifiers, the Hornets were the Section 8A academic champions as a team. Daniel Graham, Jake Nagel Derek Zitzow and Cade Nagel were selected as four of the 15 academic all-stars in the section as well.
