0Doreen Carol Schrandt, age 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at Perham Living in Perham, Minnesota after suffering a major stroke.
Doreen was born to Melvin and Gladys (Nielson) Johnson on January 2, 1941 in Steele County, North Dakota. She attended country school near Hope, ND, and, after moving to rural Frazee in 1952, she graduated from Frazee High School in 1959. She was active in band, FHA, Student Council, and many other activities.
On June 4, 1960, she was united in marriage to Leonard Schrandt at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee. They just celebrated their 63rd year of marriage. They lived in Frazee where they raised their two daughters. Doreen and Leonard owned the L.B. Hartz Store for many years until retiring from the grocery business in 1995. After a year of enjoying retirement, Doreen went to work at Lake Shirts, where she continued embroidering shirts for 10 years.
Doreen served her community in a variety of ways over the years. She was an active 4-H mom, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, a Christian Mother, a catechism teacher, and volunteered at the library link and the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program. She was involved in her girls’ activities and was always ready with a pan of bars when needed. She loved fiercely and shared her kindness easily.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard (Perham); her two daughters, Kathleen (Paul) Calmus of Frazee and Mary (Bruce) Anderson of Barnesville, MN; her sister, Darlene (Rolland) Mammenga of Duluth, MN; and many nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
