June is National Turkey Lovers’ Month and last week Gov. Tim Walz declared Sunday, June 18, Turkey Lovers’ Day in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Turkey Growers Association (MTGA) and the Minnesota Turkey Research and Promotion Council (MTRPC) applaud Governor Tim Walz for declaring June 18, Turkey Lover’s Day in Minnesota. June is known as National Turkey Lovers’ Month, with June 18 specifically noted as National Turkey Lover’s Day.

“Minnesota’s turkey industry is resilient. Since the beginning of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak, the turkey industry has fought to overcome challenges, all while continuing day-to-day operations and providing turkey for families worldwide to enjoy,” said Jes Westbrock, President of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association.

Minnesota turkey farms and companies that process turkey are integral to the state’s economy. Minnesota is the number one producer of turkeys in the nation and is home to 600 turkey farms across the state and three turkey processors. Minnesota’s turkey industry annually contributes over $12 billion in economic activity to Minnesota and provides more than 46,0001 jobs.

Turkey is an easy choice for a healthy lifestyle because it’s leaner than most red meat and even chicken. A 3-ounce portion of roasted skinless turkey breast contains only 3 grams of fat and 27.3 grams of protein.

“As a third generation turkey farmer, I am proud of our industry’s history in Minnesota. Turkey is a versatile, delicious, low fat and high protein option for families to enjoy daily,” said the Minnesota Turkey Research and Promotion Council President, Pete Klaphake.
