Swimmers to compete in West Fargo on Saturday

The Detroit Lakes swim team defeated Thief River Falls on Tuesday night in a dual, before traveling to Bemidji for a large invitational on Saturday. 

The Lakers will get a little bit of a break from competition as they will not compete again until Saturday when they travel to West Fargo for a swim meet. 

Tuesday

The Detroit Lakes swim team defeated Thief River Falls by a score of 124-59 on Tuesday night.

The Lakers, which include several team members from Frazee, captured first place in every event and were led by Grace Hamm who finished in first place in four events. Hamm took first place individually in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. She was also a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay team and 200-yard medley relay. 

Her sister Hope Hamm captured first place in the diving competition with a score of 211.15. 

Head coach Samantha Salathe said she was pleased with the performance of the Lakers, who continue to show improvement in the pool at each meet. 

“Lots of great swims where the girls raced to win—finishing strong and hard. Divers showed great improvement and looked awesome as always,” she said. 

Saturday

The Detroit Lakes swim team traveled to Bemidji on Saturday for the annual Bemidji girls invitational. 

Head coach Samantha Salathe said the Lakers had some great swims and dives throughout the meet. She said she used the meet to give some of the swimmers the chance to compete in events they normally don’t compete in, which she said was also fun for the team. 

In the diving competition, Hope hamm finished in fifth place with a score of 223.10, while Izabella Goodrich took 10th place with a score of 191. 

The Lakers’ 200-yard medley relay team of Emily Peterson, Marian Martin, Grace Hamm and Peggy Whitteron took fourth place overall with a time of 2:05.62. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Peterson, Riley Wendt, Whitteron and Grace Hamm also finished in fifth place with a time of 1:54.31.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Hannah Barberg, Whitteron, Martin and Quinn Rogstad took fifth place with a time of 4:20.78 to round out the relay events. 

Individually, Emily Peterson captured fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:02.85, while Wendt took sixth place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:21.24.
