Notes from the Chief
Not much has changed on the farm in the last week or so. The cows are still on pasture and the calves are not weaned yet. The weaning process, I hope, will be done before deer hunting. Preg checking is scheduled for November 3, so hopefully the weather holds for that morning. We will have our 64 cows, 10 replacement heifers and 18 of the neighbors to check. This process should take a couple of hours and then we will know which mamas to keep and which to cull. The preg checking will be a little different than years past as there is a new ultrasound machine to tell if the mama is with calf.
The image will be seen on the monitor just like at the doctor’s office. This new-fangled technology is safer than the old way and a way to move with the times. I will let you know how it works in a couple of weeks.
