0Sand, Schramel to join staff at Essentia Health St. Mary’s
Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Detroit Lakes is welcoming certified physician assistant Abigail Schramel, a Detroit Lakes native specializing in emergency medicine to its staff.
“Growing up in Detroit Lakes, I saw practicing at Essentia Health as a way to give back to the community I was raised in,” Schramel said. “It was apparent throughout the hiring process that Essentia had the close-knit, family feel that I was looking for in my future practice.”
Schramel received her medical education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
“I love the variety of patients that come through our doors each day, allowing me to use many different skills I learned in school,” said Schramel, a graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. “The emergency room is fast-paced and keeps you on your toes, and it takes everyone working as a team to care for our patients.”

Lindsey Sand
The Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Detroit Lakes Clinic is welcoming advanced practice registered nurse Lindsey Sand, who specializes in family medicine to its staff.
“What drew me to Essentia Health and guided my decision were the people that work within the organization,” Sand said. “Throughout the interview process, I was met with kind, warm-hearted and empathetic people. It made me want to be a part of this team.”
Sand received her medical education from North Dakota State University and is certified in family medicine by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
“I have always had a passion for providing care for people, which led me to my initial RN degree,” said Sand, who grew up in the region. “I felt I could provide more help and do more for the health of people within my community by becoming a nurse practitioner, and so I took the step to become a DNP. I chose the specialty of family medicine because I feel you get to know the patient best and have the opportunity to care for them throughout their lifespan, managing multiple acute and chronic disease at the same time.”
