Notes from the Chief
The cows were run through the chute last Friday and we ended up with 71/73 pregnant, which is a great percentage for us.
Usually we have 6-8 to cull, this time it’s only two plus one skinny cow that might not make it through the winter. The calves were put through the process also with weaning tags and were separated after one week. The calves will now be on a backgrounding ration. The cows will be turned out to winter pasture after deer hunting.
As far as deer hunting is concerned, it should be more like, no deer hunting, meaning we haven’t seen the numbers of deer like we have in the past.
The only deer I saw was a buck chasing a doe after dad let a barrage of 30-30 rounds go encouraging them to run a little faster.
Hopefully, the second weekend will bring more deer to see, watch and maybe harvest. Last year, I had about the same luck. Three times while sitting in the stand this year I didn’t even load my rifle. Sitting in the heated stand with sammiches, snacks and coffee can be quite relaxing for me. Hope the rest of you have had a successful and safe hunt.
