The ninth ranked Frazee Hornets had a flare for the dramatic last week as five of their matches came down to the final weight class. With all eyes on him during each of the final matches, Frazee heavyweight wrestler Xander Kohler went a perfect 5-0 with five pins to help the Hornets improve to 10-2 overall and a championship at the Pierz Duals on Friday.

The championship on Friday capped off a busy week for the Hornets as they went 8-2 in 10 matches, including a triangular at Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie and a home quadrangular as well.

In addition to the team accolades, Preston Mayfield secured his 75th career win during the Frazee quadrangular on Thursday night.

In their lone action of the week, the Hornets will travel to Moorhead on Thursday night for a dual against the Spuds.

Tuesday

Ninth ranked Frazee split a pair of matches on Tuesday night against eighth ranked Royalton-Upsala and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie.

The Hornets secured a win over BHVPP in dramatic fashion after falling behind by a score of 25-3 after the 139 lbs. match.

Brady Borah gave the Hornets a bit of life at 145 lbs. when he secured a fall over Dylan Day and Tyler Moe followed with a major decision over Tanner Schulke at 152 lbs.

Following a pin by David Revering, of BHVPP, at 160 lbs. that put the Raiders in front by a score of 31-13, the Hornets went to work with Preston Mayfield securing a pin at 172 lbs. in just 34 seconds and Jack Graham followed with a major decision at 189 lbs. to make the score 31-23 in favor of BHVPP.

Derek Zitzow secured a pin at the 3:07 mark of his 215 lbs. match over Zach Mak to set up a winner-take-all heavyweight bout between Braden Shamp and Xander Kohler.

In what would be a prelude to the week, Kohler secured a pin over Shamp at the 3:05 mark of the match to give the Hornets a 35-31 win over the Raiders.

In their other match of the night, the Hornets fell to Royalton-Upsala by a score of 33-22.

Thursday

The Frazee High School gym was packed on Thursday night for a quadrangular against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Wadena-Deer Creek, Lisbon and Pelican Rapids. The Hornets finished the night with a 3-1 record thanks to a pair of thrilling wins that came down to the final weight class.

Down 31-9 heading into the final four matches against Lisbon, the Hornets needed to essentially run the table to come away with the win. Fortunately for Frazee they did just that as they secured wins in the final four matches of the night by either a disqualification or pin to come away with a 33-31 win.

Preston Mayfield started the improbable run after winning his 172 lbs. match by a disqualification, before Jack Graham secured a pin over Trent Metzen at the 3:11 mark of the second period to make the score 31-21 in favor of Lisbon.

Derek Zitzow made quick work of his opponent at the :27 mark of the first period at 215 lbs. to pull the Hornets within four points with just the heavyweight match left.

Xander Kohler wasted little time in putting Aiden Hinkle on his back to secure the pin and complete the amazing comeback by a score of 33-31.

Not to be outdone, the Hornets also secured a 36-35 win over Pelican Rapids thanks to yet another Kohler pin at heavyweight.

Frazee got off to a slow start in the match and trailed 18-0 after the opening three bouts of the match. Liam Hamm put a stop to Pelican Rapids start with a pin at 127 lbs., before the Vikings came away with another pin at 133 lbs. to take what should have been a 24-6 lead. However, Pelican Rapids was deducted 1 point for unsportsmanlike conduct during the 133 lbs. match, which would prove to be the difference in the match and leave the score at 23-6.

The Hornets began chipping away at Pelican Rapids’ lead with a Brady Borah 9-7 decision at 139 lbs., as well as a Josh Mellema 10-4 decision at 145 lbs. Tyler Moe brought the Hornets to within 5 points after he secured a forfeit at 152 lbs.

After an Anthony Checo de Souza pin at 160 lbs. gave the Vikings a 29-18 lead, the Hornets went on to win three of the final four bouts of the night by a pin to secure the 36-35 win.

Mayfield secured a pin at 172 lbs. to make the score 29-24, while Graham gave Frazee its first lead of the night when he secured a pin at 189 lbs. over Elias Valdovines.

Kaden Holt secured a pin for the Vikings to make the score 35-30 in favor of Pelican Rapids to once again put the pressure on Kohler to come away with a pin, or a tech fall to send the match into a tiebreak.

Kohler didn’t leave the match up to the tiebreak as he secured a pin late in the first period over Edwin Escebar to put the Hornets in front in thrilling fashion 36-35.

In addition to the pair of close wins, the Hornets picked up a 54-12 win over Wadena-Deer Creek and fell to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton by a score of 36-28.

Friday

Despite being one of the few Class A schools in the tournament, the Frazee Hornets secured first place at the annual Pierz Duals on Friday. The tournament featured a mixture of Class A, Class AA and Class AAA schools from across the state.

The Hornets placed first in their pool thanks to a 36-26 win over Elk River and a 39-28 win over Moorhead. In their third pool match, Xander Kohler secured a pin at heavyweight to put the Hornets in front for good by a score of 27-22.

The three wins set the stage for a championship match against Pierz, who won the other pool in the tournament. Pierz opened up an early 15-0 lead after the opening three bouts of the match, before Liam Hamm secured a pin at 127 lbs. to start a stretch of 6 wins in 7 bouts.

Blake Sonnenberg followed with a 6-0 decision at 133 lbs., Josh Mellema secured a pin at 139 lbs., Bailey Peichel won by a tech fall at 145 lbs., Cade Nagel won by a 5-1 decision at 160 lbs. and Preston Mayfield gave the Hornets a 29-21 lead with a pin at 172 lbs.

Pierz would go on to win by a 3-0 decision at 189 lbs. and a fall at 215 lbs. to take a 30-29 lead heading into the heavyweight bouts between Kohler and Wyatt Dingmann.

With a flare for the dramatic all week long, Kohler wasted little time in putting Dingmann on his back as the Frazee heavyweight secured a pin at the 51 mark of the match to give the Hornets a 35-30 win and a championship at the Pierz Duals.
