0Marion Patricia Brenk, a beloved member of her community, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023, surrounded by her loving daughter. She was born in Perham on March 17, 1930 to Rudy and Katherina Rethwisch of Frazee, MN. She attended and graduated from Frazee in 1948. She enjoyed music and played organ at Bethlehem Lutheran church throughout her teen years.
Marion’s roots were deeply tied to her upbringing. She met Paul Brenk, fell in love and they married on August 9th, 1952. So began their incredible journey together. After Paul completed medical school, they spent their early years stationed at Fort Benning, GA where they witnessed the historic and monumental desegregation in the South. Soon after, the family moved back to Detroit Lakes, establishing a permanent life filled with abundant hockey and community engagement.
Marion’s sharp intellect, love for literature, and prowess in cribbage were complemented by her enthusiasm for hosting card games, especially Mahjong and Bridge. Her dedication extended to co-owning Detroit Paint and Glass alongside her son, Matt. Summers at Lake 7 held a special place in her heart, relishing sunsets and the camaraderie of neighbors over coffee or cocktails.
A woman of diverse interests, Marion engaged in vibrant conversations, had a keen interest in politics, enjoyed fine wine, and actively contributed to her community. Her love of music continued through her entire life, prompting her to even take lessons in adult life. Her commitment to family was unwavering, leaving an enduring impact as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Marion’s passion for travel led her overseas seven times, with her most cherished journey being her trip to Greece to “rescue Paul.”
Marion is preceded in death by her husband Paul, and son, Paul Casey. She is survived by her children: Matt (Mary) Brenk of Detroit Lakes, Rebecca (Wayne) Mickelson of Frazee, Christopher (Debra) Brenk of Frazee. 10 grandchildren Kelli (Luke) Ellenbaum. Kasey (Aaron) Lindstrom, Beau (Ashley) Mickelson, Danielle (Tom) Stolee, Hannah (Luke) Halbakken, Devon (Tate) Jansen, Jake (Nicole) Brenk, Jess Brenk, Eric Brenk, Ian Brenk and 19 great grandchildren.
