The Frazee Hornets broke a school scoring record that was set 10 years ago on Tuesday night as they defeated the Staples-Motley Cardinals by a score of 88-34. The previous school record, which the Hornets tied earlier this year in Warroad, was 83 points.
Jayden Sonnenberg nearly outscored the entire Cardinal team herself as the sophomore finished with 33 points and 7 rebounds. Brynn Larson also reached double figures as she scored 14 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 7 steals. Katie Courneya and Hailey Selly each finished with 9 points, while Hailee Olson scored 8 points, Annalise Olson scored 6 points, Riyan Eckert scored 5 points and pulled down 7 rebounds and Ashley Malikowski and Rylee Stock rounded out the scoring with 2 points apiece.
On Thursday the Hornets fell to 0-7 in the HOL with a tough 66-48 loss to the Breckenridge Cowgirls. In a physical game throughout the contest, the Hornets were led offensively by Larson with 26 points with Sonnenberg chipping in with 12 points, Eckert scored 3 points and Malikowski rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
On Saturday the Hornets picked up their second win of the week as they defeated Thief River Falls by a score of 57-53.
Head coach Trey Heinsius said it was a great game by both teams, but ultimately the Hornets did just enough down the stretch to hold off the Prowlers. Among the highlights of the game were two key free throws by Katie Courneya in the final seconds of the game to put the Hornets up by 4 points.
Sonnenberg led the way offensively with 22 points, followed by Larson with 12 points, Courneya scored 8, Eckert scored 6, Malikowski scored 4, Annalise Olson scored 3 and Hailey Selly rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
The win brings the Hornets record to 7-7 on the season as they hit the road this week with a conference game in Hawley on Tuesday night and a Friday afternoon game against Henning at 1 p.m. as part of their Snow Week festivities.
