The Sportsman’s Lodge at Lake of the Woods reported anglers on the lake reel in about 3.5 million walleyes ever year. So, the odds were in Travis Gray’s favor that he’d come home with a few walleye form a recent fishing excursion. Instead, the 2011 Frazee High School graduate came home with a trophy northern pike that is in the process of being mounted. The fish weighed in at 18 pounds and 41 inches in length.

Frazee High School junior Luke Tweeton celebrates with his hand in the air after secured a 4-2 decision over Nick McCabe of Caledonia-Houston in the quarter-finals on Friday. Tweeton went on to place second at 220 lbs. when he lost a close 3-2 decision to Dominik Vacua of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River in the championship. In addition to Tweeton, 170 lbs. junior Brett Graham placed fourth at the state tournament.

“We’re No. 1” is a chant that most people in Frazee were saying this weekend as the wrestling team took home top honors at the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament. Frazee placed first in the Class A team tournament and had five place in the individual competition. The team notched a championship 37-21 win over New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Saturday to bring home the gold. Individually, the was a year for records for Frazee, as a state record was claimed when Frazee sent 12 individuals to the tourney.

Varying viewpoints and some emotional confrontations came forth at a special Frazee City Council meeting Monday night to review the proposed community center. About 25 people gathered to look over blueprints and review plans for the $450,000 community center which is planned to be given to the city once it’s constructed by the Frazee Community Development Corporation. During the two-hour session, the most frequently aired concerns appeared to center around:

– Can the center make money or break even?

– Is parking adequate downtown for a facility which can hold up to 450 people?

– Does the facility have two be attached to the liquor store?

Two grand openings of businesses in Vergas are scheduled this weekend. The Looney Bin Discount Store, a new business, has opened its doors next to the Hartz Store in Vergas. The store, opened by Marlo Sonnenberg, features a variety of items from clothing, to tools. Wayne Cummings is the new proprietor of the Vergas Appliance and Floor Covering. This business was formerly part of the Vergas Hardware Co. Both businesses are offering many specials and prizes for their grand openings March 8 and 9. Their opening advertisements appear in this issues of the Forum.

Otter Tail Power Company’s total tax bill for 1973 (local, county, state and federal) amounted to $6,946,830 representing a cost of $19,032 per day, or 16 cents out of each dollar of revenue, according to Albert V. Hartl, Otter Tail’s President. Payments for the Company’s taxes due in 1974 were sent out this past week to County Treasurers throughout Otter Tail’s service area, from its headquarters in Fergus Falls, Minn. The payments were for both personal property and real estate taxes as required by law.
