Carl Christensen is preparing to race across the Atlantic Ocean in a row boat. “We have no sail, no motor, just oars and a four-man crew made up of all veterans,” he said. The 37-year-old is the skipper of a boat that is designed for ocean travel. His team will launch on December 12 from the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa and oar about 3,000 nautical miles to the Caribbean island of Antigua. “More people have climbed Mount Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic,” Christensen said.

Lori Christensen of ICS Consulting was present to give a report to the Frazee-Vergas School Board as they consider how to move forward with construction planning for the upcoming renovations to the elementary school that were approved by voters last November. The Frazee-Vergas School Board work session meeting focused on discussions around the timeline of the process.

Part—but not all—of the controversial dam near Highway 87 has been removed. The partial removal has been part of the latest round of follow-up work following the demolition earlier this year of the main Frazee dam over the Otter Tail River. Reduction in the size of the sand dam was in the original dam removal contract with Gothman Excavating, said project foreman Craig Waddell. The removal of the sand dam has been a point of contention between the City of Frazee and rural Frazee resident Dewayne Schaefer.

How can a person top off a public career that includes terms as mayor, council member, school board member, fireman, fire chief, and Joint Powers Committee member? Well, if a person lives in Frazee, he or she can be named grand Marshall of the Turkey Days parade. Russell Vikesland, who did all of the above, has just been chosen as this year’s grand marshal, by the planners of Frazee Turkey Days parade at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1.
