Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…The summer farming is sort of at a plateau for us. The last 2 acres to bale will be up soon even though it may not be the highest quality hay.
Some pieces of hay ground need to be cut to control the weeds and promote a fresh new crop of grass and/or alfalfa. We are close to 1,100 bales for the year which is probably double from last year so we won’t have to buy any hay this year.
It is soon time to wash up the haycutters and round baler and park them inside until next spring. There are a few repairs to make which shouldn’t take too long. The recent rains have turned the corn into a potentially great crop. We will chop about 30 acres for silage and hopefully combine 10 acres for grain which we will mix in our feeder calf ration.
The rains have blessed us with plenty of green pastures this year too. Rotation of the pastures will also help extend the grazing season. After three summers of near drought conditions, this summer is a nice change.
