After 119 votes were purchased to buy the Snellman mayor seat, Darlene Pihlaja won the title. The annual fundraiser held during Snellman Day allowed visitors to purchase a voting card for $1 and write any name on it. Then, that card was placed in a ballot box and one card was randomly pulled after the voting closed. “It is a blind draw, so one vote could have won,” said event organizer Aune Longfors.

A home in Frazee will be featured on HGTV’s Lakefront Bargain Hunt, along with two other homes in the area. Rita Moshier, who lives on a corner lot on Willow Avenue near the public beach, put her home up for sale recently. “My realtor called and said an HGTV show wanted to feature my home,” Moshier said. “I thought it was a joke.” Coldwell Banker realtor Julie Bormann said that initially, she also thought it was a joke, or a scam.

Hanson’s Plumbing and Heating may be synonymous with efficient and knowledgable service, but that is no reason there isn’t opportunity to become even better. Jason Hanson, the president of the company, explained the business added a new warehouse in Vergas. The 40-foot by 80-feet by 16-feet addition will allow all necessary equipment to be stored in one location, as well as the larger items, like installation material, plumbing pipe and duct work.

Frazee’s West Main Avenue is now darker at night, since most of the street lights were removed last Friday. It may be a while before the street are lighted, as the new lights will be installed after the sidewalks are poured. Sidewalks were ripped up last Wednesday and contractors estimated it would take three weeks before the new sidewalks are poured. Once the new sidewalks are in, Otter Tail Energy Resources can install the new light poles.

Frazee’s new senior citizen apartments are expected to be ready for occupancy on Nov. 1, and people are ready to occupy it. That’s the word from Becky Manske, program manager for the Becker County Housing and Redevelopment Authority. The building, near the Frazee Care Center, is being constructed with part ($130,000) of a larger multi-purpose grant from the state Department of Trade and Economic Development.

If you’re a bear hunter, you need resilience. Roy Schwartz knows that. He’s already shot three bears. Schwartz shot a male black bear last week about five miles north of Frazee, on the Dave and Arlene Nelson property, near the Frazee School Forest. But he had to wait to do it. After he waited for the bear, he wanted four or five nights and nothing happened. Then he waited about 90 minutes on Sept. 16 and finally the bear came, at about 7 p.m. Schwartz was in a tree, about 20 feet away. He shot. The bear fell.

Eight cars of a westbound Burlington Northern freight train derailed about 5 1/2 miles west of Frazee shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. There were no injuries. Three of the cars overturned, and were heavily damaged and ripped up many yards of track. Both the eastbound and westbound tracks were blocked by the wreckage. The eastbound track was cleared and repaired with rail service restored early Tuesday morning.
