Notes from the Chief
Notes from the Farm…Preggo checking on Halloween went very well with the new set up in the barn working very well. One little fix for the calves next time as there needs to be a narrower chute for them so they don’t turn around. Preg checking was done with an ultrasound wand and monitor which is moving along with the times compared to manual palpation by hand.
The cows had a 96% conception rate which is the best we have had ever I believe. Higher conception rates hopefully mean more babies on the ground next spring.
Weaning tags were put in the calves’ nose and will be taken out in 5 days. These tags prevent the calf from getting milk from mama so after 5 days, the calf will not have the desire/need for mama anymore. This is to help lessen the stress of separation from the mama cow. The calves will be weighed when the tags are taken out and then they will be in their own feedlot and have their special backgrounding ration.
Deer hunting will be upon us this upcoming weekend and we ask that everyone be safe and practice the 4 rules of firearms safety.
1. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
2. Know your target and what is beyond.
3. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you know your target and are ready to shoot.
We also need to remember the most important safety rule for hunting season: Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
Good luck and safe hunting!
