Five Marauders took home titles as the University of Mary wrestling team opened their season in style at the Jimmie Open. Sean Solis, Dante Roggio, Luke Tweeton, Kaden DeCoteau (wrestling unattached) and Michael Murillo (wrestling unattached) all won in their respective weight classes.
Eight Marauders finished in the top three. Last season, UMary claimed four titles at the Jimmie Open.
Sean Solis (141) opened his day by pinning Bismarck State’s Ethan Kuntz at the 1:24 mark. Solis defeated Minot State’s Wayne Joint by a 4-1 sudden victory. After defeating his teammate Gabe Mortensen in the semifinals, the Long Beach, CA, native dominated the championship match, defeating Northern State’s Karstyn Lhotak by tech fall 17-1.
Dante Roggio (184) won his first two matches via pinfall over NSU’s Tanner Meyers and MSU’s Dom Howlett. Roggio then won by 17-1 tech fall over Sioux Falls’s Daevon Vereen. The final match saw the Kuna, ID, native grind out a 9-8 decision over NSU’s Damen Pape.
No. 5 Luke Tweeton (285) defeated Minnesota State Moorhead’s Liam Babitt by a 7-2 decision. Tweeton then took down NSU’s Grady Fey by a 6-3 decision. The Frazee, MN, native won by a 7-3 decision over NSU’s Nathan Schauer. The All-American finished his open by winning a 2-0 decision against USF’s Isaiah Laguna.
Kaden DeCoteau (149) won his first match via pinfall over Jamestown’s Jace Goebel at the 1:01 mark. DeCoteau then won his next two matches by tech fall, defeating USF’s Mitchell Koss and MSUM’s Beau Daily. The Bismarck, ND, native defeated NSU’s Cole Holien 12-5 in the semifinals. DeCoteau shut out NSU’s Carter Ban in the finals, winning 5-0.
Michael Murillo (197) pinned Jamestown’s Cullen Glatt at the 1:57 mark in his opening match. Murillo defeated MSUM’s Isaiah Huus by a 20-2 tech fall. In the semifinals the Bakersfield, CA, native blanked NSU’s Tyson Lien by a 5-0 decision. Murillo won the 197-pound weight class by defeating MSU’s Cannon Potts by a 10-4 decision.
Claiming top three finishes for UMary at the Jimmie Open:
Mason Gutenberger (wrestling unattached) went 3-1 at 125 to finish 2nd
Kaden Renner went 3-1 at 165 to place 2nd
Gabe Mortensen earned two pinfalls at 141 to take 3rd
The Marauders next competition is the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, SD, on November 9.
