Thirteen Hornets place at tournament

Bailey Peichel took first place and the Hornets took third as a team at the Heart O’ Lakes Conference wrestling tournament over the weekend. A total of 13 Hornets placed in the top six overall as they continue to gear up for the final push before the section wrestling tournament in approximately one month.

In addition to the HOL Conference meet, the Hornets defeated Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville on Tuesday night and swept a triangular on Thursday against United Clay Becker and New York Mills. 

Tuesday

Frazee got out to an early lead and dominated the middle weights as they secured a 38-32 win over perennial powerhouse Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville on Tuesday night.

Caleb Ratz and Ashton Reller got things going for the Hornets as they secured a pin and a tech fall to give Frazee an 11-0 lead.

After three straight wins, including back-to-back forfeits gave the Wolves a 17-11 lead, Liam Hamm, Cash Osterman and Bailey Peichel helped the Hornets charge right back with a pair of pins and tech fall. 

Leading 28-17, Blake Sonnenberg secured a major decision at 160 lbs. to give Frazee a 32-17 lead heading into the final four matches.

LPGE-B won three straight matches, including a decision and pair of pins to tie the match up at 32-32 heading into a winner-take-all heavyweight match against Cade Nagel and Tommy Miron. 

Nagel left little doubt in the outcome of the match as he secured a pin in the first period to give the Hornets a 38-32 win.

Thursday

Frazee kept their winning streak alive on Thursday night as they swept a triangular against United Clay Becker and New York Mills.

The Hornets opened the night with a 45-23 win over the Eagles. Frazee took advantage of five open weights for NY Mills on their way to a victory. 

In their other action of the night, Frazee cruised to a 60-6 win over United Clay Becker. The Hornets were just one match away from making it a clean sweep and shutting out the Badgers who were able to secure just one win in the dual.

Saturday

The Frazee Hornets put on a show at the Heart O’ Lakes Conference tournament over the weekend. A total of 13 wrestlers placed in the top six as the Hornets took third overall at the large eight-team tournament. 

Staples-Motley took first place in the tournament with 258 points, while Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton took second place with 184 points. Frazee finished in third place with 148 points, while Perham was fourth with 128 points. 

Bailey Peichel was the lone champion for the Hornets as he improved to 26-2 on the season with three commanding wins. All of Peichel’s wins came by fall, which lasted a combined 4:51. The longest of his matches was in the championship in which Peichel picked up a pain over Jarrett Galzki of Park Rapids Area in 3:06. He was crowned as the 145 lbs. champion.

Cash Osterman took second place at 139 lbs. as he pinned his way to the finals with falls over Zander Deutsch of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, as well as Jaxn Heintzelman of Pelican Rapids and Tate Pauna of Barnesville. 

In the championship match, Osterman fell to Turner Beachy of Staples-Motley by an 18-6 major decision to finish in second place.

Also placing for the Hornets was Ashton Reller, who finished in third place at 107 lbs.; Christian Peichel, who finished in fourth place at 114 lbs.; Josiah Drewes, who took sixth place at 121 lbs; Gabe Schermerhorn, who took third place at 127 lbs.; Liam Hamm, who took third place at 133 lbs.; Ethan Royer, who took sixth place at 133 lbs.; Hunter Malone, who took fifth place at 152 lbs.; Blake Sonnenberg, who took third place at 160 lbs.; Cade Nagel, who took fourth place at 215 lbs.; and Gavin Pope, who took sixth place at 285 lbs.
