Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Farm…By the time you read this, we will have 40 or so less animals on the farm.  The calves that were born last April and May will have been hauled to the Perham Stockyards.   Buyers will do their bidding and they will be shipped to a feedyard where they will begin the fattening process.

As of late, the calves have been in the “feeder” stage, which is getting to and through most of the puberty stages. These heifers and steers will then be ready for the fattening stage, where the calf’s frame is done growing. They will now be able to put on the fat and muscle to make the wonderful steaks and roasts that us meat eaters have grown to enjoy.

The fattening process will take another 6 months or so, to finish around 1,500 pounds. Right now, our calves are between 750-900 pounds, I would say. We will keep 10 or so heifers for replacements and also a couple of the biggest steers for fattening for our own consumption.

We have sold the calves in January or February for the last several years. We seem to have plenty of feed and the facilities have been updated to accommodate the 50-60 feeder calves each year. By the time sale day rolls around, hopefully we have added a nice bit of weight to the calves.

Sale time for us also means that the calves have been around long enough and we may be getting a little sick of feeding every day. We will still have plenty to feed, we can cut down to twice a week. Hopefully, the sale will go well as beef prices are doing very well for the farmers due to low cattle numbers in the U.S.

Have a nice week!
