The Frazee Hornets split a pair of matches in a home triangular on Thursday night.

Gavin Pope picked up a big major decision win at 215 lbs. during last week’s win over Fosston-Bagley.

The Hornets opened the night with a thrilling 34-30 win over Fosston-Bagley, which had important implications for the upcoming Section 8A tournament.

The Hornets trailed for just about the entire match as Fosston-Bagley won five of the six matches wrestled from 121 to 152 lbs. The lone win during that stretch came from Bailey Peichel who won by a tech fall at 145 lbs.

Following a Blake Sonnenberg major decision at 160 lbs. that made the score 24-18, Fosston-Bagley was able to secure a pin at 172 lbs. when Gunner Nolan won by a pin and put the visiting team up by a commanding 30-18 score with three matches left.

Bailey Peichel sends his opponent over his back and to the mat during last week’s match against Fosston-Bagley.

Following a forfeit at 189 lbs., Gavin Pope secured a big 14-4 major decision at 215 lbs. to force a winner-take-all finals with the Hornets trailing 30-28.

Cade Nagel left little doubt of the outcome of the match as he secured a pin in just 48 seconds to give the Hornets a 34-30 win over Fosston-Bagley.

Also securing wins for the Hornets was Christian Peichel at 114 lbs. who won a 5-1 decision, as well as Ashton Reller and Tanner Moe who each secured a win by forfeit.

In their second match of the night the Hornets came up just one point short of knocking off 12th ranked West Central Area as Frazee fell 34-33.

The Hornets once again fared well in the middle to upper weights against the Knights as they held a 29-22 lead heading into the 189 lbs. match up. Unfortunately, the Knights secured back-to-back pins at 189 lbs. and 215 lbs. to give WCA a 34-29 lead heading into the heavyweight match.

Nagel was able to secure a 9-0 major decision at heavyweight, but narrowly missed out on a second thrilling team victory of the night as Freddi Munoz did just enough for West Central Area to not get pinned or lose by a tech fall to give the Knights the 34-33 win.

Also securing wins for the Hornets was Reller who secured a 10-1 major decision at 107 lbs., Liam Hamm who secured a pin at 133 lbs., Bailey Peichel who secured a pin at 145 lbs., Hunter Malone who secured a pin at 152 lbs., Blake Sonnenberg who secured a major decision at 160 lbs. and Raymond Sanchez who secured a 4-3 decision at 172 lbs.
