In the first year that Perham High School has offered national contests in speech Kayle Baumgart punched her ticket. “We have 60 people on the speech team and three applied,” said third year coach Kasey Wacker. The reigning Miss Vergas was the sole competitor at Perham High School to qualify for nationals—a goal no one expected to achieve.
Generations of memories have been made where State Highway 34 meets Becker County 29. For years, the store Four Corners provided a gathering point for locals, as well as gas, bait and convenience shopping. When the doors closed a few years back the community waited for someone to swoop in and carry on the tradition. Five area investors were among those waiting.
Frazee City Mayor Ken Miosek reported a private developer expressed interest in building a multi-family housing unit in the Red Willow Heights development. During the monthly Frazee Economic Development Authority meeting on Tuesday, April 28, Miosek stated the city was approached by a person looking into building a six-plex that resembles town houses.

Firemen battled a 150-acre grassland blaze last Thursday, four miles east of Frazee off Highway 87 near the Mike Kohler residence. The fire started near burning barrels on the Koehler property. The fire spread to at least one other property owner’s land, no buildings ignited. Frazee firemen were assisted by DNR on the scene for four hours.
Vergas’ newly-revised dog ordinance was put to the test at Monday’s Vergas City Council meeting. Dawn Hodnefield said she keeps her two small cocker spaniels in a kennel, but an unleashed neighbor dog repeatedly comes into her yard and “eggs them on.” The agitation from the neighbor dog causes her spaniels to bark in response, which spurs complaints from other neighbors, she said.
Frazee eighth graders scored lower, as a group, than the state average in reading and math basic skills tests. This year’s Frazee eighth graders scored the same as last year’s eighth graders in reading, but lower in math. Tested in February, 74 percent of this year’s eighth graders passed the reading test and 68 percent passed the math test. When last year’s eighth graders were tested, 74 percent passed both the reading and math tests.

Youngsters ages 13-17, are now required to obtain a watercraft operators permit before running boats with motors over 24 h.p., do not have to attend classes or pay a fee to qualify. Further, the youngster does not require a permit if he is accompanied by someone of at least 18 years of age.
The Mrs. Jaycees just found out they have until May 15 to turn in Betty Crocker coupons. Thanks to the people of Frazee, Mrs. Laurine Anderson, and the school kids, they were able to turn in 36,350 coupons at their State Convention last weekend. Let’s keep up the. Good work. These all go to build a cabin at Camp Friendship.
A large group of children and adults are shown preparing to start a Bike-Hike Saturday to raise money by pledges for Minnesota’s Retarded Citizens. The bikers traveled to Vergas and back to Frazee, and many went even farther.
